BATESVILLE, Arkansas -Centerfielder Sophie Varela broke the single-season walk record for Lyon College softball on Sunday afternoon against the Harris-Stowe Hornets

In the bottom of the third inning of Sunday's 20-0 win over the Hornets, Varela drew a walk with two outs. It was the 26th time this season she has walked to first base, breaking the previous record of 25 held by Phenix Butler from 2009.

The freshman from Los Fresnos, Texas, has led the Scots in hitting with a .388 batting average in 40 games with 116 at-bats. Varela has scored 32 times, has 45 hits, five doubles, four triples and 21 runs batted in. Her slugging percentage is .500, with 26 walks, four hit by pitches and an on-base percentage of .510. She also leads the team in stolen bases with 17.
