TEXARKANA, Texas – The (RV) Lyon College softball team defeated Texas A&M-Texarkana, 11-10, and was edged by Xavier University of Louisiana, 9-7, in the final day of the Texarkana Tournament.
(RV) Lyon moves to 3-1 on the season. Xavier University of Louisiana goes to 2-1, while Texas A&M-Texarkana drops to 0-3.
Game One: Xavier University of Louisiana 9, (RV) Lyon 7
The Gold Nuggets grabbed an early 3-0 lead after one inning of play. Lyon, though, responded with a five-run third inning, giving the Scots a 5-3 advantage.
Xavier University of Louisiana answered right back with a five-run inning of their own, giving the Gold Nuggets an 8-5 lead after four innings of play. Lyon would scratch a run across in the fifth and the seventh, but ultimately fell to Xavier University of Louisiana by a score of 9-7.
Lyon was led offensively by
Kassidy Robinson and
Madison Sansom. Robinson was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI in the contest, while Sansom tallied three RBI's.
Game Two: (RV) Lyon 11, Texas A&M-Texarkana 10
The Scots wasted no time in this one as
Addison Harmon led off the game with a single to left field. A walk of
Faith Cornmesser and a pair of stolen bases by Harmon put runners on the corner with one out in the frame.
Jasmine Carlos, then, laced an RBI single into center field, giving Lyon a 1-0 lead. The Scots would tack four more runs on in the frame on a pair of errors by the TAMUT defense, giving Lyon a 5-0 advantage.
A leadoff double by
Kassidy Robinson and a hit-by-pitch of Cornmesser put runners on first and second with no outs in the top of the second inning. Cornmesser would come around to score on a fielder's choice, extending Lyon's lead to six.
Madison Sansom, then, delivered an RBI single, plating Carlos. Two more runs would come in on a wild throw by TAMUT, giving Lyon a 9-0 lead after two innings of play.
Texas A&M-Texarkana would answer back with a two-run third inning and a four-run fourth inning, trimming Lyon's lead to just three.
The Scots, though, would answer back in the top of the fifth inning as
Celsey Wood ripped a single to left field, scoring
Cheyenne Herrera.
Olivia Floyd, then, delivered an RBI groundout, giving Lyon an 11-6 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Eagles scored four runs and put the tying run in scoring position. However, Platt was up to the challenge as she struck out the final batter of the game, giving Lyon an 11-10 victory on Saturday.
Offensively, Lyon was led by
Cheyenne Herrera and
Jasmine Carlos. Herrera went 2-for-4 with three runs scored, while Carlos tallied two RBI's and scored two runs in the contest. Lyon was led in the circle by
Katelyn Platt. Platt earned the complete-game victory, while striking out three.
UP NEXT FOR THE SCOTS
The Scots travel to Tennessee to take on Freed-Hardeman University on Saturday, Feb. 13 for a non-conference doubleheader with the first game starting at 12:00 p.m.
