Box Score 2 BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. – The (RV) Lyon College softball team fell to Blue Mountain College, 8-2 and 3-2, in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday.
(RV) Lyon moves to 3-7 on the season, while this was the first two games of the season for Blue Mountain College.
Game One: Blue Mountain 8, (RV) Lyon 2
The Scots got on the scoreboard first as
Addison Harmon drew a leadoff walk to open the game. After Harmon stole second,
Kassidy Robinson hit an RBI single to left field, giving Lyon a 1-0 lead in the early going.
The Toppers, though, would answer right back with a run of their own in the bottom half of the frame on a sac fly by Cheyenne Childress, knotting the game at one.
The game would remain tied until the bottom of the fifth inning. Blue Mountain College would score six runs, highlighted by a bases clearing triple by Emaree Stone.
The Scots scratched a run across in the top of the sixth inning as
Cheyenne Herrera hit a one-out single and would come around to score on a passed ball, trimming Blue Mountain College's lead to five.
The Toppers, though, scored a run of their own in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by Anna Purvis to give Blue Mountain College an 8-2 advantage.
The Scots were unable to get a rally going in the seventh inning and lost to the Toppers in the first game of the doubleheader, 8-2.
Lyon was led offensively by
Faith Cornmesser. Cornmesser was 3-for-3 in the contest.
Game Two: Blue Mountain 3, (RV) Lyon 2
Lyon wasted no time in this one as the Scots capitalized on three straight Blue Mountain College errors to score two runs in the top of the first inning.
The Toppers, however, responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning to knot the game at two.
In the bottom of the third inning, BMC's Emma Stone hit a two-out double to center. Anna Taylor, then, followed it up with an RBI single, giving the Toppers a 3-2 lead after three innings of play.
The score remained 3-2 in favor of Blue Mountain College through six innings of play.
In the seventh inning, a pair of singles by
Melanie Mooney and
Kassidy Robinson put runners on first and second with two outs. The Scots, though, were unable to get the run home and fell to the Toppers by a score of 3-2.
Offensively,
Melanie Mooney paced the Scots as she had a pair of hits in the contest.
Katelyn Platt came in in relief and pitched 3 and 1/3 scoreless innings.
UP NEXT FOR THE SCOTS
The Scots travel to Oklahoma to compete in the Red Dirt Classic on Friday, Mar. 5 and Saturday Mar. 6. Lyon will take on No. 4 Oklahoma City University and No. 2 University of Science and Arts on Friday. The Scots will face Ottawa University and McPherson College on Saturday.
