Chad Cook and the Lyon College wrestling team will be at the 19
th annual Desert Duals tournament this Sunday at the Flamingo Casino and Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Duals is hosted by Wartburg College of Iowa, and who is the top-ranked team in the D3wrestle.com poll. Â The event will take place in the Flamingo Ballrooms and begin at 10 a.m. Central Standard Time.
Teams making up the field are Concordia Moorhead, Alvernia University, North Central College, Buena Vista, Lyon College, New Mexico Highlands University, Dixie State University, Arizona Christian, Grand Canyon University, Ottawa University (AZ), UNLV Wrestling Club and Wayland Baptist.
"We are excited to compete in it," Lyon College head wrestling coach
Chad Cook said. "Wartburg is one of the best Division III colleges. We took this opportunity to see people outside of our region, people we wouldn't normally see."
Cook said the team has had two-a-day training sessions after finals were over to prepare for the Desert Duals.
"We have gotten some good training in after finals got over with," Cook said. "We have been doing two-a-days, working a little harder than we have before and hoping to see some results from it. We are going to compete against Arizona Christian, Wayland Baptist from Texas and Ottawa, Arizona. I think those programs have done well. We will test ourselves against some top teams."
The Scots feature returning national qualifier
Carlos Cuevas at 157 pounds.
"He is a very consistent wrestler, but he has had a rough start to the season, losing to the number two and number three ranked guys, so it has really been the luck of the draw," Cook said. "We wrestle one of the toughest schedules in NAIA at the first of the season. We are pretty young team and we are taking those lumps that hopefully we can learn from and get better. And by the time we get to the second semester, we will be hitting our stride."
Raul Gonzalez is a fifth-year senior for the Scots and wrestles at 165 pounds.
"He has had a multitude of injuries this year and has only competed once this year," Cook said. "Him coming back is going to be a big help for us."
Cook looks to see improvements out of Harry Rodriguez.
"He is an interesting case," Cook said. "I coached him at Kentucky Wesleyan his first year and this is his third year in college and he has never competed or practiced for the first two years. As a team, it has been a lot of ups and downs with us this year. This team has the potential to improve."
Lyon wrestles 10 different weight classes and will face other wrestlers in the double-elimination matches.
