BATESVILLE, Arkansas - Lyon College athletics is proud to welcome new Scots softball assistant coach Avery Sanders.
Sanders is a from Thibodaux, Louisiana and holds a Bachelor of Science in General Biology from Mississippi College. She also has an Associates of Science degree and an Associates of Arts degree from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.
"Id like to thank Lyon College and Coach (Taylor) Kuhn for giving me this opportunity as a first-year coach," Sanders said. "I am excited to learn and grow as a coach and more importantly, a mentor to these girls."
In her professional career, Sanders has been a pitching instructor for eight to 18 year-old girls in their development of softball. She created drills on a Facebook page where she gained 100-plus followers of girls and parents in Thibodaux. She managed her time to train 25 girls each week, as well as lesson plans for each specific girl.
Beforehand, Sanders was the team lead at Sterling Wellness Solutions of south Louisiana where she utilized tablet-based technology to check-in health screening participants and worked at Greenhouse Nursery.
Also in Thibodaux, Sanders was a softball coach for XLR8 Softball travel softball teams, which participated in tournaments throughout Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida and Alabama. She coached young players and directed practices to build players to the peak of their performance, while also working directly with the players in their preparations for their respective seasons. Sanders was also a coordinator of summer leagues at the TREC in Thibodaux and was the head director for nine softball and baseball fields during league hours.
Sander's volunteer work consists of working at The Farm System: Baseball and Softball Academy in Thibodaux where she conducted softball pitching clinics, planned and scheduled camps and taught beginner to advanced drills to campers. Sanders was also a volunteer for the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science in Jackson, Mississippi where she shadowed Aquarium Biologists through daily tasks, assisted with exhibits, prepared food for the animals and studied in the Ichthyology lab to preserve fish of Mississippi. She was also a volunteer at XLR8 Summer Clinics where she managed campers pursuing the knowledge of softball and instructed drills to help enhance pitching performances.
Sanders is CPR certified and has a SSI Scuba certification.
During her playing career, Sanders had a total of 202.1 innings pitched, 210 strikeouts and an ERA of 2.59 at Mississippi Gulf Coach Community College. While there, she had a season-high 14 strikeouts in one game against Marion Military Academy.
Sanders also played at Mississippi College for three years where she totaled 268.1 innings pitched, 249 strikeouts and tied the school record with strikeouts in a single game of 13 against the University of Alabama at Huntsville.
