David Butterfield has announced that Brandon Schmidt and
Kooper McCoy '26 will join his staff. Schmidt will head recruiting efforts and serve as the pitching coach, while McCoy will take on the role as assistant coach.
"We are extremely excited to have Coach Schmidt join our staff this year as our Recruiting Coordinator and Pitching Coach," said Butterfield. "Coach Schmidt brings nine years of collegiate coaching experience with him and will make a positive impact right away. He has a track record of recruiting talented players who not only perform on the field, but also excel in the classroom. He is one of the best pitching coaches in the region and takes pride in the ability to develop competitive arms looking to play at the next level"
Butterfield added, "I am also proud to announce that
Kooper McCoy will be staying in our program as our Assistant Coach. Coach McCoy was a three-year letterman from 2024-26 and earned All-Conference honors in back-to-back seasons while leading our team behind the plate. He brings a high-level of hitting knowledge and catching experience to our program."
Schmidt comes to Lyon having most recently served as the head coach at Baton Rouge Community College, where he led the Bears for two years. Prior to that he served as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. During his time with the Warriors his staff's recorded several programs milestones such allowing the fewest hits, earned runs, and walks in program history during the 2020 season. In 2019 his team led the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) and was ranked third in the nation in shutouts. Schmidt coached seven All-SAA pitchers, an SAA Newcomer of the Year, and helped get Hendrix to their first SAA conference tournament appearance. His stops include stints as the head coach of the Texarkana Twins, Austin Action, and as an assistant at Little Rock Central High School. His collegiate career was spent as a member of the University of Central Arkansas and Crowder College baseball teams.

McCoy will make the transition from behind the plate to the dugout, bringing his excellent playing experience with him. As a member of Scots' baseball he was recognized by the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with all-conference honors two years in a row, named a United States Collegiate Athletic Association Academic All-American twice, and earned a place on Natural State Baseball All-Arkansas Team in back-to-back years.
McCoy remarked, "I am grateful to announce that I will be staying at Lyon College as an Assistant Baseball Coach. I am thankful for the coaches, teammates, alumni, and supporters who have invested in me throughout my journey. It is an honor to give back to a place that has given me so much. I'm excited for this next chapter and ready to get to work. Go Scots!"
Schmidt a native of Little Rock, Arkansas earned Bachelor of Science in Family and Consumer Science from the University of Central Arkansas. McCoy a native of Coweta, Oklahoma earned Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Lyon College.
