Batesville, AR - Lyon College softball split the weekend series with the Blackburn College Beavers, Scots bounced back after a loss in game one (6-3) using all-round better play to take the second game (2-1). Lyon is now 5-23 on the season and 2-8 SLIAC conference play.
Through both games Scots tallied 17 hits, Onhrie Bergman and
Skylar Foreman were the top batters. Bergman recorded three hits and drove in two RBI in the game one, while Foreman drove in the only two RBI on a hit in game two.
Carlee Duncan handled all 14 innings of competition today earning a win and loss, while recording six strikeouts. She is now 2-7 on the season.
Game 1
Lyon 3, Blackburn 6
With the Scots out-hitting their opponent 10-8, missed opportunities caused by a strong defensive performance were a big part of the first game. Lyon would finish four innings with two runners left on base. Blackburn would take the lead early, 4-0, scoring off an RBI single to left field in the 2nd and tacking on three more runs off a home run in the 3rd. Lyon had looked to respond during those innings, but after a ground out ended the 2nd with two runners in scoring position and three quick outs retired the side in the 3rd. Blackburn would add another two runs off a home run in the top of the 4th, 6-0, Lyon's offense would respond. Back-to-back singles would place
Taylor Gongre and
Kori Cox on base, and a walk would put
Anna Voth at first. With bags loaded Bergman would single up the middle driving home two RBI, 6-2. In the 5th Foreman would make it home after a dropped ball in left field allowed Cox to reach on a error, 6-3. Scots would have opportunities in the final two innings, with two runners on in the 6th a
Chloe McCance would strike out swinging to end the inning and in the 7th.
Game 2
Lyon 2, Blackburn 1
The second game featured a strong pitching performance from Carlee Duncan and timely hitting from the Scots to secure the win.After four scoreless innings, Lyon broke through in the fifth. Callie Marberry and Ohnrie Bergman reached base before Sophie Varela added another hit to load the bases. Skylar Foreman came through with a clutch single to right field, driving in two runs to give the Scots a 2-0 lead. Blackburn answered with a run in the sixth, but Duncan remained composed in the circle. She worked a complete game, allowing just one run on seven hits while keeping Blackburn off the scoreboard in the final frame to secure the victory.
Scots will be back at Howard and Mary House field this coming Wednesday, April 15th to take on the Mission University Patriots in a double header first pitch is at 1:00 PM.
