Batesville, AR - The Lyon College Scots battled throughout Wednesday's double-header against the Mission University Patriots, but ultimately fell in both contests (7-3, 12-11). Despite the results, Lyon showed consistent offensive production and resilience, highlighted by a near comeback in game two. Lyon softball moves to 5-25 on the season.
The Scots recorded 24 hits across the two games, with Mia Sanchez leading the way with six hits and three RBI on the day. Chloe McCance and Skylar Foreman each added multiple RBI, while Lyon pitching combined for nine strikeouts across both contests.
In Game 1, Lyon struck first in the opening inning as Skylar Foreman delivered an RBI double to score Mia Sanchez and give the Scots an early 1-0 lead. Mission University responded with a big second inning, plating five runs to take control of the game (5-1).
The Scots chipped away in the third as Foreman added a sacrifice fly to bring home Sophie Varela, cutting the deficit to 5-2. Mission added two more runs in the fourth, capitalizing on defensive miscues to extend their lead to 7-2. Lyon answered in the fifth when Sanchez tripled down the line and later scored on another sacrifice fly from Foreman, but the comeback attempt fell short as the Scots dropped game one 7-3.
In Game 2, both teams came out swinging early. Mission jumped ahead 2-0 in the first, but Lyon quickly responded as Sanchez drove in a run and Chloe McCance followed with an RBI single to tie the game (2-2). The Scots took a 3-2 lead in the second after another sacrifice fly from Foreman.
Mission regained the advantage in the third inning, scoring three runs to go up 5-3, and later extended the lead to 7-3 in the fifth. That's when Lyon delivered its biggest surge of the day. The Scots exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth, capitalizing on timely hitting and Patriot errors to take a 10-7 lead. Key hits from Foreman, Taylor Gongre, McCance, and Sanchez fueled the rally.
The Patriots answered in the sixth and seventh innings to tie the game at 10-10, forcing extra innings. In the eighth, Mission capitalized on Lyon errors to score two runs and take a 12-10 lead. The Scots fought back in the bottom half, as Gongre drove in a run with a double, but Lyon was unable to complete the comeback, falling 12-11 in a tightly contested finale.
Lyon softball will head north to take on Principia College Panthers in another SLIAC Conference matchup this coming Saturday, April 18 in double header starting at 12:00 PM.Â
