Batesville, AR - After falling in the first game of the double-header (11-3), the Lyon College Scots made a coordinated effort to push back on the Mississippi University for Women Owls in the second game. Tighter play in the field and more offense made the Scots harder to contain. However, MUW would prevent Scots from taking advantage of these situations to take game two (7-3). Lyon softball is now 4-22 on the season and 1-7 in conference play.
Lyon recorded 17 hits across both games with
Skylar Foreman being the lead hitter on the day, driving in two RBI and notching four hits. Scots tallied six strikeouts on the day with
Taylor Gongre leading the way five and
Madison DeRoussel.
In Game 1, MUW would take the lead early with a two RBI double which the Scots would answer with a run of their own. An error comitted by the Owls at second base would allow
Sophie Varela to score (2-1). Defense on both sides were tight through the second, but Mississippi would tack on two more runs now 4-1.
Chloe McCance would cut the lead in half with an RBI double to bring home
Mia Sanchez, now 4-2. An error filled fourth inning would help MUW to score four more runs making it 8-2. Lyon's final offensive stroke came as
Kori Cox recorded an RBI double to left field to bring home Gongre (8-3). Owls would add on three more runs, taking the game 11-3. In Game 2, the Owls would once again jump out to an early lead 3-0 in the first. Scots would cut the lead to two (3-1) in the bottom of the first as Foreman would send Sanchez home on an RBI double. Mississippi Women would score another two runs in response in the top of the 2nd making it 5-1 Owls. No other scoring would take place till the top of the 5th when MUW added another two runs (7-1). Lyon had scoring opportunities in sixth and seventh innings as players reached through hits or being placed there, but quick would follow to end any momentum. In the sixth, with runners on first and second with two outs a quick ground out ended the opportunity. In the seventh, Scots would load the bases with three back-to-back singles. Sanchez would score off an error, leaving two on the bags but quick outs would end the comeback. MUW would take the second game 7-3.
Scots will be back at Howard and Mary House Field tomorrow as they take on the Blackburn College Beavers in a double header starting at 1:00 PM. Scots softball will also celebrate Military Appreciation Day and recognize those who have come before with Alumni Day.
