Brownwood, TX - The Lyon College Scots used timely hitting, aggressive baserunning, and strong work out of the bullpen to earn a 10–5 victory over the Howard Payne University Yellow Jackets. Scots are now 2-1 on the season.
Garrett McClain earned his first win on the mound in relief, allowing just one run over 4.2 innings and striking out one batter. Thomas Irwin and Cole Slaten combined to finish the final frames and preserve the lead. Scots did well offensively finishing the day with nine hits, seven RBI, and ten stolen bases. Ashton Compton and Braden Bramlett had good days each notching a hit, two RBI, and two stolen bases. Eli Marcotte and Jarius Edwards each added a hit and two stolen bases. Kooper McCoy drove in a run and added a stolen base, while Misael Santiago added another RBI and stolen base. Slade Inman added two hits.
After falling behind early, Lyon responded with a two run third inning to even the game at 2–2. The Scots capitalized on pressure and mistakes, as Santiago stole home and Edwards who had reached on an error was brought home by McCoy.
Lyon continued to chip away, taking a 3–2 lead in the fifth as Compton would come home after an error by the shortstop. Scots would added two mores in the sixth with Santiago driving in a run with a bases loaded walk, and Edwards sending Tyler Hahn home on a sacrifice fly to give the Scots a 5–2 advantage.
The Scots added another run in the seventh on aggressive baserunning as Bramlett stole home, then broke the game open in the eighth inning with a four runs. Compton delivered the key blow with a two run single to right field, while Bramlett added a sacrifice fly and McCoy capped the inning with an RBI single to push the lead to 10–3.
Howard Payne attempted a late rally in the ninth, scoring two runs off a double, but Irwin and Slaten's play including two strikeouts would secure the win.
Scots will stay on the road, heading to Clarksville to face the University of Ozarks Eagles in a double header on Tuesday, Feburary 24th at 1:00 PM.
