Brownwood, TX - Lyon College Scots baseball opened its 2026 season breaking even against the Howard Payne University Yellow-Jackets. Scots took the first game of the day in a shutout in which every run came in eighth inning. Second outing of the day Lyon led most of it but loaded bases set up the Jackets walk-off. Scots are now 1-1 as they begin their 2026 campaign.
Sophomore Parker Paschal got his first win on the mound as a Scot, through two innings he recorded three strikeouts allowing no runs and no hits. Tyler Hahn had the best bat of the day recording two hits, best of which was double that drove in three runs. Ashton Compton and Braden Bramlett each notched three hits and drove in a run.Slade Inman laid down two hits and an RBI, Aidan Linson and Eli Marcotte each added a hit and 1 RBI a piece. Jarius Edwards, Misael Santiago, and Landon Swallow each recorded two hits.
Game 1
Lyon 6, Howard Payne 0
The opening game was a pitcher's duel through seven scoreless innings before Lyon broke through in the top of the eighth with a six-run outburst to secure the victory.
Lyon's pitching staff was dominant from the start. Joe Galay set the tone with five shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out five. Parker Paschal earned the win in relief, tossing two perfect innings with three strikeouts, and Kenny Jennings closed the door in the eighth to complete the shutout.
Offensively, Lyon scattered hits early but could not push a run across until the eighth. Landon Swallow opened the inning with a single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt. After Jarius Edwards worked a walk, Ashton Compton delivered an RBI single to score the game's first run. Aggressive baserunning and pressure forced an error that allowed another run to score before Aidan Linson came through with a pinch-hit RBI single. The big blow came from Tyler Hahn, who doubled to left center to drive in three runs and cap the six-run frame.
Compton finished with two hits and an RBI, Hahn recorded three RBI on his double, and Linson added a key RBI off the bench. Lyon totaled eight hits in the win while holding Howard Payne to four hits on the day.
Game 2
Lyon 4, Howard Payne 5
Second game saw Scots battle back from an early deficit and take a late lead before Howard Payne walked it off in the bottom of the seventh.
Howard Payne struck first in the opening inning with two runs, but Lyon answered in the fourth. After a double from Slade Inman, Eli Marcotte singled to drive him in, and Marcotte later scored on a ground out by Hahn to tie the game at 2-2.
Lyon took the lead in the fifth with aggressive baserunning as Misael Santiago stole home following a walk and stolen base by Kooper McCoy to make it 3-2. The Scots added another run in the seventh when Santiago singled, advanced into scoring position, and came home on an RBI ground out by Inman.
On the mound, Jackson Smith delivered a strong start, allowing just two runs over five innings with four strikeouts. Linson worked out of trouble in the sixth, but Howard Payne capitalized on a bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs to secure the walk-off win.
Santiago led Lyon offensively with two hits and two runs scored, while Bramlett added two hits. Inman and Marcotte each added a hit and an RBI. Lyon finished with nine hits in the contest but was unable to hold the late lead.
Scots will finish out their time in Brownwood tomorrow as they take on the Yellow Jackets again this Saturday, February 20th at 12:00 PM.
