Batesville, AR - Former Scots baseball player Andy Schatzley has joined the Los Angeles Angels as their new Infield Coach. This promotion comes after Schatzley had spent several years as a manager in Minor League Baseball (MiLB) working for multiple Angels affiliates, most recently with the Rocket City Trash Pandas in Madison, Alabama.
Schatzley was a member of the 2007-08 squads under head coach Kirk Kelley, along with current Scots head baseball coach
Justin Cunningham. "Andy becoming the Angels' infield coach is a tremendous milestone, not only for him but for Lyon College as the first Lyon grad to reach the big leagues in a coaching role," said Cunningham. "We've known each other a long time, and he's always been the same guy—hard-working, selfless, and committed to lifting the people around him. His success is a product of genuine character and relentless effort".
After graduating from Lyon, he began his coaching career in the college ranks as a graduate assistant at Lubbock Christian University while he attained his masters degree in organizational leadership. During his time in Lubbock, he was a part of the Chaparrals 2009 NAIA Championship team. In that same year he lead the El Dorado Broncos, a summer collegiate wood bat league team to a National Baseball Congress World Series Title. In 2011 he joined Emporia State University staff as an assistant coach for the season and during the summer of that year he managed another summer collegiate wood bat league team in the Outer Bank Daredevils. In August of 2011 he would become the assistant coach at Harding University, a role he would remain in through the 2019 season.
In 2020, Schatzley began working for the Angels organization taking over as the manager for the Orem Owlz based in Orem, Utah. Unfortunately the minor league season that year was canceled do to the Covid-19 pandemic, his next opportunity would come in 2021 as the manager for the Pasco, Washington based Tri-City Dust Devils. After earning the Preston Gomez Award for Angels Minor League Manager of the year in 2021, he would leave Washington for Madison, Alabama just outside Huntsville to become the new manager for the Rocket City Trash Pandas in 2022. Schatzley would manage the Pandas for four years, leading them to the playoffs in 2022. This was the first time a Angels Double-A team had made it to the postseason since the Arkansas Travelers did in 2015. This achievement led to him being named 2022 Southern League Manager of the Year. In 2024 he also managed the Mesa Solar Sox in the Arizona Fall League. Schatzley's teams throughout his coaching career have been known for their infield defensive ability.
Prior to playing at Lyon he played at Pratt Community College in Pratt, Kansas from 2004-2006.
Everyone at Lyon College would like congratulate Coach Andy Schatzley.
