Memphis, TN - In the second day of the Rhodes College Classic the Scots had a tough outing. Lyon couldn't find the win against Austin College (20-25,10-25,13-25) and took a tough loss against Hendrix College in five sets (25-22,20-25,26-24,17-25,9-15). Lyon volleyball is now 1-4 on the season.

Lyon 0, Austin 3
The Scots had opportunities in this match especially in the first set, but play from Austin and errors by Lyon made the victory difficult to grasp. Scots had 24 kills, 22 assists, and 38 digs while the Roos finished with 31 kills, 13 service aces, 26 assists, 39 digs, and 8 blocks.
Scots had an opportunity in the first set, kills from
Reyleigh Twist with assists from
Sofia Santis and
Caroline Snow put Lyon up, 4-2. A kill, service ace, and error would put Roos on top, 6-4. A service ace from
Madeline Hopson would be key to take back the lead, 9-6. Austin would close the gap to 9-9 off a kill, ace, and Lyon error. A kill from
Claire Carothers assisted by Hospon put Lyon back up 12-11 but a service error restored the tie now 12-12. Lyon would take the lead again off an attack error by Austin as well as kills from
Keeley Beary and Twist, 15-13. A Roos block and kill would bring Scots lead to only a point, 16-15. A kill from Fuller would make it a three point lead, 18-15, but Roos would then go on a 6-0 run. With score now 21-18 Austin, two Roo kills and two Lyon attack errors would end the first set.
The second set got off to good start with a kill from
Mollie McCoy to put Scots up 3-0, this was quickly responded to by Austin to tie things up 3-3. Scots and Roos would find themselves tied again 6-6, but Austin would go a 9-0 run to make it, 15-7.
Isabel Cervantes closed the lead to seven points off a kill with an assist from Hospon, 15-8, but Roos would extend again with 10-2 run to end the second.
Scots were down early in the third set 6-2, with kills and errors putting the Roos in the lead. A kill from
Avery Fuller and service ace by Twist would make it a two point game, 8-6, but Austin pulls away scoring four to make it 12-6. Roos errors and a kill by Cervantes would make it 12-8, but three attack errors and service aces would give Austin a clear lane, 17-9. Roos would go on 8-3 run to end the third set and take the match.
Twist led the team in points with nine, kills with seven, and service aces with two. Snow led the team in assists having 11 and contributed three digs. Santis led the team with 12 digs and contributing two assists.
Lyon 2, Hendrix 3
Scots battled Hendrix in tough loss, Scots took sets 1 & 3 but came up short in the fifth with the offense making crucial kills. Scots had 43 kills, 11 service aces, 14 blocks, 42 assists, and 54 digs. The Hendrix Warriors had 73 kills, 10 service aces, only three blocks, 71 assists, and 71 digs.
Scots got off to a 4-1 lead in the first, off two Warriors errors, an ace by
Avery Fuller, and a kill by
Reyleigh Twist from
Caroline Snow. Hendrix would battle back but an
Abigail Martin kill assisted by
Madeline Hopson would tie it 8-8. Scots would go on a 5-0 run with a kills from
Mollie McCoy & Twist, service ace by Fuller, and two errors making the difference, 13-9. Warriors would respond with 5-0 run of their own putting Lyon down by one 14-13 but would quickly tie things back 14-14 off an error. Kills from
Keeley Beary and Oliva Locke would be key for the Scots lead along with errors from Hendrix, 20-18. An Locke ace, kills from McCoy and Twist would put Scots up 24-20. The final kill from Beary assisted by Snow would give Lyon the first set.
With the Scots up 5-3 in the second set Hendrix would tie things off blocking errors and a kill to tie, 5-5. A Warriors error would put the ball back in Scot hands allowing kills by
Isabel Cervantes, Fuller, Martin, Twist, and a block by Martin to put Scots up 14-11. After trading points,18-15, a four point run by Hendrix would give them a slight lead which would erased with a kill by Fuller assisted by Locke. Warriors would take the set on a 6-1 run off kills and errors by the Scots.
Scots would take lead early in third set 5-1, off errors by the Warriors, a Fuller ace, and a kill from McCoy assisted by Snow. Warriors would close lead to one point, 5-4, but another McCoy kill assisted by Snow and a Locke service would extend lead, 7-4. This lead would be short lived as a service error gave Hendrix the ball and two kills followed, 7-7. Teams would trade blows then be tied again, 12-12, a kill from Cervantes would break the tie but a Scots blocking error would make it tied 13-13. A block by Martin and Fuller, Fuller ace, and kill from Twist assisted by Snow would make it a one score lead,16-15. Quick kills from Hendrix would put them up one, 17-16. A block by Cervantes and Beary plus an error would give Scots lead,19-18. Teams would tie again four times until a kill from Beary gave the Scots their second set.
Up two sets Scots looked to win out in the fourth, but found themselves down early 6-2. A service error by Warriors would put the ball back in Scot hands for a Locke ace, kills from Beary, McCoy, and Locke to put Lyon up, 7-6. Hendrix responded with a 6-1 run to make it 12-8. Warrior would then in score triples and doubles with occasional Lyon kill or error closing lead slightly. Hendrix would take the fourth set 25-17.
Scots would start the fifth set down, 4-0. Not giving up a kill from Fuller assisted by Snow would close lead to three,4-1. A block from Martin and McCoy keeps the lead to three, 2-5. Scots would tie things up on a 4-0 run with kills from Beary and Fuller as well as a Twist and Beary block, 6-6. Hendrix would respond with a 5-1 run with Lyons only score coming off an error, 11-7. A block from Riley Brady would close gap to just three points, 11-8, but a string of kills and aces from Hendrix would seal the set and the match 15-9.
Fuller lead the team in points with 16 and service aces with six, she contributed nine kills, two blocks, and nine digs. Twist lead the team in kills with ten, she contributed two blocks and one assist. Martin led the team in blocks with nine, she contributed 10.5 points, and five kills. Snow led the team in assists with 24, she contributed one ace and six digs. Twist and Locke are tied leading team in digs each having 13. Locke contributed two kills, three aces, and four assists.
Scots volleyball will travel to Jackson, Mississippi to compete in the Millsaps Invitational facing McMurry University and Centenary College on Friday, September 12 starting at 2:00 PM.
