Jackson, MS - Lyon Scots volleyball headed south to compete in the Millsaps Invitational where they split their first day of matches, going 1-1. Lyon fell to McMurry in three sets (22-25, 13-25, 14-25) and won in a dominate fashion over the Centenary Ladies (25-10, 25-16, 25-18). Lyon is now 2-5 on the year.

Lyon 0, McMurry 3
Scots were in the first set keeping up with McMurry's offensive ability, but mistakes by Lyon allowed the Warhawks to take the start. McMurry made less mistakes overall and capitalized on the opportunities that they had. Lyon had 20 kills, five service aces, 17 assists, seven blocks, and 25 digs. McMurry had 32 kills, 12 service aces, 30 assists, six blocks, and 37 digs.
In the first, Lyon got off to lead,5-2, with kills from
Avery Fuller,
Cristen Cleveland, and
Keeley Beary. A block by
Abigail Martin and
Mollie McCoy began a 4-2 run that put the Scots up by five, 10-5. McMurry closed the gap to just two points off kills and a service ace, 10-8. Scots extended their lead off a 5-0 run started by a Beary solo block and two Fuller service aces, 16-9. The Warhawks responded with a 6-0 of their own with points scored off three kills, two errors, and a block to bring them within one, 16-15. A kill by Cleveland assisted by
Caroline Snow would make it 18-16, but a 3-0 streak would put McMurry back in lead, 19-18. Two back-to-back kills by McCoy and a
Reyleigh Twist kill from Snow tied the set, 21-21. Warhawks would take the first set off a 4-1 run.
McMurry had the lead in the second set, 7-2. An error by the Warhawks and a block by Fuller and Beary closed lead to three, 7-4. Warhawks went on a 11-3 run, off kills, aces, and errors to make it 18-7. Scots responded with 5-1 run, with kills from Martin and Fuller, an ace by Cleveland, and a block from Martin and McCoy, 19-12. McMurry put the set away with a 5-1 run.
Scots started up 4-2, off kills from Beary and
Isabel Cervantes both assisted by Snow as well as an ace from Fuller. A 5-1 run by the Warhawks put them in two point lead, 7-5. A Scots 3-0 run scored off errors from McMurry brought it within one point, 11-10. McMurry would shoot ahead scoring nine points unopposed off kills, errors, and aces, 20-10. A kill from Beary assisted by Snow, block Cervantes and Beary, and errors by McMurry would leave still down nine points, 23-14. Back-to-back attack errors would close third and final set.
Cleveland led the team in points (7), kills (6), digs (6) and she contributed six digs, one assist and one service ace. Fuller led the team in service aces (3), she contributed three kills and one dig. Snow led the team in assists having nine and contributed three digs.
Lyon 3, Centenary 0
The Scots set the tone throughout all three sets against Centenary, rarely trailing and maintaining control for the vast majority of the match. Lyon's offense was superior with 40 kills all told, 12 service aces, and a hitting percentage of .337. Scots also had 35 assists, 38 digs, and one blocks. The Centenary Ladies had 20 kills, 20 assists, five blocks, and 23 digs.
Scots started down in the first for a brief moment, 4-3, but errors by the Ladies kept things close. Lyon would pick up the pace going on a 6-0 run, scoring off kills from
Cristen Cleveland and
Mollie McCoy all assisted by
Caroline Snow, 9-4. Centenary would close the gap slightly off an error, 9-5, but Scots would jump out on a 6-2 run with kills from
Reyleigh Twist and McCoy assisted by Snow as well as a kill from
Keeley Beary, 15-7. Lyon delivered the dagger for the first set with 5-0 run with errors by the Ladies and kills from
Avery Fuller and Beary assisted by
Madeline Hopson, 22-9. Final three points would be scored off an
Abigail Martin kill with Hopson providing the assist and two errors.
Second set started close tied 3-3, with an error, kill from Fuller, and a kill from Cleveland assisted by
Olivia Locke contributing to the score. A 6-1 run followed soon with a kill from Martin assisted by Snow, Cleveland service ace, and two key kills from McCoy both assisted by Snow, 9-4. Ladies closed the lead to just two with a kill and two errors by the Scots, 9-7. Back-to-back service errors would keep Lyon's lead intact, 10-8, but kills from Fuller, Beary, Twist, and an ace by Hopson would put the Scots out ahead 14-8. Twist's two service aces would widen the lead to seven, 17-10. Snow would facilitated the three final kills to take the set 25-16.
Scots got off to a great start in the third set, grabbing a 6-1 lead. Hopson facilitated kills by Cleveland and Beary, while Twist's three service aces kept the Ladies from gaining any momentum. Both teams exchanged points with kills from McCoy, Fuller, and errors by the Ladies keeping Scots on top, 12-10. A kill from
Claire Carothers set up by Locke extended a 3-0 run started off errors by Centenary, 15-11. Hopson fueled the Scots offense setting up two Beary kills that in addition to a kill by Carothers and service ace from Snow kept the pressure on, 20-13. Snow would set up the final 3-0 run facilitating a kill by McCoy, leading to Locke assisting Twist's kill, and the final point being scored from a service ace by Hopson.
Beary and McCoy led the team in kills and points each having nine Beary had a .615 hitting percentage. McCoy .500 hitting percentage, she also contributed one dig. Twist led the team in service aces (5) and assists (13), she contributed three kills. Martin had the most blocks with one, she contributed four kills. Snow led the team in assists with 18, she contributed three service aces and four digs.
Scots will face the University of Dallas and Millsaps College in day two of the Millsaps Invitational on Saturday, September 13 at 12:00 PM & 2:00 PM.
