Batesville, AR - The Lyon College Fighting Scots came out on fire against Westminster College, piling up 21 unanswered points in the first quarter. They carried that momentum into halftime with the good lead, and the defense played lights out after the break. Two fourth quarter touchdowns sealed the victory, 38-24, in Lyon's first win of the season and first ever win in Bad Boy Mowers Stadium. Scots are now 1-2 on the year.
Offensively, Scots totaled 347 yards with 72 coming from the ground game.
Grayson Johnson threw for 275 yards on 31 completions, and one touchdown.
Javarion Williams recorded 15 receptions for 156 yards and a 63-yard touchdown catch. Jacob Williams led the Scots in rushing gaining 25 yards on 31 carries and a touchdown. On the Ground
Tky Posey notched 24 yards on 24 carries and a touchdown, Johnson also had a rushing touchdown.
Scots defense feasted, tallying nine sacks, 15 TFLs for 63 yards, and a forced fumble that was taken in for a touchdown.
Keidrick Wooten led the defense with eight tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss for 22 yards all which of were sacks on the Blue Jays quarterbacks.
Rene Dominique had six tackles, four tackles for loss for 14 yards, and forced the fumble that he ran in for a touchdown.
William Litton had seven tackles, 3 tackles for loss for 18 yards, and two sacks.
In special teams
Jesus Romero-Castillo had a day, going 1-2 in field goal attempts and making all five extra points. Romero-Castillo only punted three time for 122 yards, two of which landed inside the 20-yard line. He also notched two tackles on the day.
Javarion Williams led the team on punt return gaining 36 yards on five receptions and
Louis Calhoun recorded 36 yards on two kickoff returns.
Scots would score their first touchdown of the quarter on a eight play drive, starting on the Westminster's own 36-yard line
Jacobi Williams would carry the ball for nine yards down on the 27-yard line. Johnson would complete a pass to Ta'John Ellis for no gain, now 3rd and 1
Javarion Williams would hit the middle to grab a first down on a 3-yard carry. A flag on the next play would push Lyon back to the 29-yard line, but
Jacobi Williams would find a hole take it to the 18-yard line. Now in the red zone,
Landon Ayala would get to the 10-yard line on a reception. Johnson on the carry would take it in the end zone, 6-0, Romero Castillo would then kick the extra point, 7-0. Defense would take over at 8:04 in the first with Litton recorded his first sack of the day, Scots would force the Blue Jays to punt after five plays. On the next drive Johnson would connect with
Javarion Williams on a 63-yard touchdown pass, 13-0, extra point by Romero Castillo would be good, 14-0. Westminster would return the kickoff to their 23-yard line, then on the first play of their drive Dominique would force the fumble then return it 18 yards for a touchdown. Romero-Castillo would fire in another extra point to make it 21-0. Scots defense would retake the field and a force a three and out.
Second quarter did not get off to great start as the Blue Jays forced Lyon to punt which they then blocked for a safety, 21-2. But the Scots defense would hold Westminster to very gain on their drive. Litton and
Dillon Green would keep pass caught at the Blue Jays own 40-yard to only four yards, Wooten would stop a rush the middle, and
Jerry McGehee prevented a first down bringing them down at the 46-yard line. With 4th and three yards to go Westminster would punt away. Lyon, on their next drive would cross midfield as Johnson and
Javarion Williams connected on 15-yard pass. Blue Jays would force a fumble and recover on a Williams reception as he reached their 34-yard line. Westminster would score their touchdown at 5:24 in second and kick a good extra point, 21-9. Lyon would go on a 17 play drive that would result in a field goal. On this drive, Scots would go for on 4th and 10 crossing midfield as Johnson found Posey for a 16-yard reception down at the West minister 47-yard line. Johnson would complete another pass to
Javarion Williams over middle ending up at the 30-yard line. Spotted at the 18-yard line Romero-Castillo would make the 33-yard kick, 24-9. With less than a minute left in the 2nd quarter the Blue Jays would score on a 65-pass. Scots would lead 24-17 going into halftime.
In the third quarter Westminster would start on their own 18-yard line after returning the kickoff. The Blue Jays would go on a seven play drive crossing midfield on a long rush and and getting a touchdown on a pass, score was now tied 24-24. For much of the third both defenses were preventing long drives and forcing punts. Wooten would record three in sacks in third quarter with all being tackles for loss, two of which came on third down and forced the Blue Jays to punt it away. After Wooten's last sack of the third, Lyon's offense would take the field and began a nine play drive. Starting on the 50-yard line a short pass to Calhoun for 11 yards would end at the Westminster 37-yard line, a rush by
Keilin Hall would get the first down at the 27-yard line. Johnson would be sacked for a loss of five yards, but short passes to Ellis and Javarion Willis would get Scots close but not enough for a first down. With seconds left and it being 4th and 4 to go, Romero-Castillo attempts a field goal that misses left. But offsides on the Blue Jays hands Scots the first down as time expires in the third.
The drive continued in the fourth starting on the Westminster four yard line, a rush from Johnson would gain a yard but
Jacobi Williams on the carry would find the end zone, 30-24. Romero-Castillo would drive in the extra point to make it 31-24. With the ball in the Blue Jays hands, Scots defense would come alive with Litton making key tackles and Dominique scratching a sack for a loss of four yards. With 11:35 left in the fourth, Scots would go on a 14 play drive that would result in punt that would muffed by Westminster giving Lyon the at the 7-yard line. Posey on carry would find the end zone on the second play, Romero-Castillo would kick the extra point good to make 38-24 Scots. Blue Jays would hunted by the defense on next series as Wooten would sack the quarterback twice for a loss of 13 yards and cause a turnover on downs. Lyon would get the ball and run out the clock.
This Saturday the Scots we be in Batesville on their bye week, but on October 11 they will travel to Abilene, TX to face McMurray University at 1:00 PM in their first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference match-up of the season.
