Batesville, AR - Lyon College Scots volleyball notched first win at home of the season, beating out the University of Ozarks Eagles in a close one. Scots took the match 3-1 (25-21, 20-25, 25-22, 25-18). Lyon is now 4-6 on the season.
Scots got ahead early in the first set with two kills from Rayleigh Twist, a kill from
Cristen Cleveland, all assisted by
Madeline Hopson, 6-1.
Avery Fuller added another kill, but the Eagles responded with two points to close the lead to four, 7-3. Another Cleveland kill began a 9-2 run in which
Mollie McCoy contributed two kills with
Caroline Snow's assistance, all other points were scored off Ozarks errors, 15-6.
Claire Carothers laid down three kills in a row to make it 20-10. A block by Fuller and
Keeley Beary and another kill by Cleveland put the Scots within four points of taking the first set, 22-12. Eagles down but not out, came back on a 6-1 run to make it 23-17. A kill from Cleveland would get Lyon even closer to the finish, 24-18, but Ozarks would score four points making 24-21. Carothers would put down the final kill for the Scots to take the match.
Eagles would be in drivers seat for the 2nd set as they took the lead early, 7-3. An Ozarks service error would put the ball back in Lyon's hands as a kill from Cleveland and service ace by Snow tied things, 7-7. Teams would trade points until a 5-0 run with kills and a block from Beary and Fuller would puts Scots on top 15-12. Eagles would find their way to lead again with a Scots error beginning a 3-0 run to make 20-17. Two attack errors by Ozarks and a block by Cleveland and
Abigail Martin would tie things again 20-20, but a five point run by the Eagles ended the second set.
Scots started off hot in the third up 7-0 off kills from the team including Beary, a Hopson service ace, and errors by the Eagles. A block error by Lyon began a 5-0 Ozarks run, 7-5. Both side exchanged points with Hopson setting up Cleveland for another, 10-10. A service ace from
Olivia Locke made it 13-11 Lyon. Ozarks hit off on a 7-1 run interrupted only an attack error to go up, 18-15. The Fighting Scots would push back with two kills from Fuller with Hopson on the assist and a block by Fuller and Beary, 18-18. A big block by McCoy and Martin would shake the Eagles allowing Cervantes to put the ball up for Fuller to drive in the kill, 24-22. Scots would take the set as Eagles would hit their own net.
A block by Fuller and Beary really began third set as the Scots went up, 3-0. Eagles would close the lead but kills from Beary and McCoy as well as errors by Ozarks would extend it, 7-3. Back-to-back attack errors would give the Scots a lead of only two, but
Isabel Cervantes would get McCoy into place for the kill, 8-5. Errors by both sides would close things up, 10-10, but Hopson would run the offense to set up kills from Beary and Cleveland, 14-11. McCoy would hit the Eagles again as Locke set up the kill, 16-12. Ozarks tally two kills to close the lead to two, 17-15. A service ace from Locke would put the Scots in position, 20-15. A quick Ozarks 3-0 run would be countered with a kill and solo block from Fuller, kill by Cleveland, and ace from Hopson. Eagles drive home the win for Lyon themselves, 25-18.
Cleveland had a double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs. She contributed 14.5 points the most on the team and led in kills. Hopson led the team in assists with 25 and is tied for lead in service aces. She contributed eight digs and one kill as well. Defensively Locke led the team with 17 digs and is tied with most service aces having two. She contributed four assists. Fuller and Beary are tied with each having four blocks. Fuller contributed ten kills, one assist, and five digs. Beary added eight kills and five digs.
