Scots split series in opening weekened of SLIAC play

Fulton, MO - Lyon Scots volleyball headed to north to open SLIAC competition against the Westminster College Blue Jays and Eureka College Red Devils. Scots broke even, falling in four to the Blue Jays (19-25, 25-21, 19-25, 20-25) and swept Red Devils (25-16, 27-25, 25-21). Lyon is now 5-7 for the year and 1-1 in conference play. 

Below are recaps of both matches. 
Lyon 1, Westminster 3

Cristen Cleveland put the first point on the board with an assist by Isabel Cervantes, but a service error would hand the ball over to the Blue Jays who would score two more, 3-1. A kill by Neveah Ghan set up by Cervantes and an error by Westminster tied it, 3-3. Teams traded points with Mollie McCoy and Keeley Beary notching their first of the match, 5-6. Scots would go up top on two Blue Jay errors and a Cervantes kill made possible by Olivia Locke, 8-6. Westminster would shoot ahead on a 8-0 run off kills, an ace, and multiple errors, 15-9. Scots would trade with the Blue Jays till a an error would put the ball back in their hands, down 18-13. A Beary kill and an error by Westminster would maintain lead at five, 20-15. Blue Jay would extend lead further on 3-0 run, 23-15, but a 4-0 run from the Scots close the gap to four points. Westminster would take the first set after a Scots error and a service ace to seal it up. 

Errors by Westminster and a kill from Beary assisted by Cervantes put Scots ahead early in the second set, 5-3. Blue Jays would respond but a service ace from Beary and an error would keep Lyon in the lead, 7-6. The Fighting Scots would extend their lead with Madeline Hopson facilitating a kill by Cervantes, back-to-back aces from Avery Fuller, and a block by Ghan and Cleveland, 11-6. A Cleveland kill would make it 13-9 Scots. This set up a 4-0 run as Cervantes ran the offense for two McCoy kills, a solo block from Fuller, and an ace by Locke, 17-10. Westminster would have a muted response closing the lead to six, 17-11. McCoy, Fuller, and Cervantes would respond with three kills with Hopson setting up Fuller and Cervantes, 20-11. Blue Jays would come alive going on a 4-0 run to close the lead to five, 20-15, but three attack errors by Westminster extended it to eight, 23-15. Final strike would come from Cervantes as she was set up by Hopson to take the second set, 25-21. 

In the third it would be tied early, 3-3, but Scots would take the lead off kill from McCoy and an error by Westminster, 5-3. Blue Jays would respond with a 5-1 run of their own with errors, kills, and a block making the difference, 9-6. Fuller brought it within two with a kill off a Hopson set up, 9-7, but the Blue Jays would score in pairs on each possession. Cervantes kept working setting up the offense as kills from Cleveland, Beary, and Ghan attempted to close the lead, 19-12. Beary and Cervantes would notch two between them assisted by Hopson to close the lead to five, 19-14. Another kill by Cervantes and ace from Fuller would make it 21-17. But Westminster would finish things on a 4-2 run off two kills and two errors. 

Blue Jays began the fourth set up, 7-1, but a kill from Beary set up by Cervantes and a three errors closed things, 8-5.  A 3-0 run with kills from Beary and Fuller facilitated by Hopson and a error kept the lead to two points, 10-8. Teams traded points back-and-fourth with Westminster still leading, 14-13, Scots would rip off a 3-1 run with a Hopson service ace and two kills from Fuller and Beary to make it 18-16. Blue Jays extend lead to five off errors by the Scots, 21-16, two kills from Cleveland would close the lead to three, 21-18. Errors and a kills would put Westminster within one point of victory, 24-20. A final kill would send the Blue Jays over the edge. 25-20. to take the match in four sets. 

Cleveland had a double-double with ten kills and ten digs, this is her second of the year. She contributed one ace and one block. Beary led the team in total points (13.5) and kills (11). She added one assist, two aces, five digs, and one block. Cervantes ran the offense leading the team in assists with 24. She tallied ten kills and six digs. Fuller led the team in service aces having three and blocks with one assisted and one solo. She added four kills, three aces, and four digs. Locke led the team defensively having 12 digs. She recorded two assists and one ace. 

 
Lyon 3, Eureka 0 

Scots started off going up 7-2 in the first off kills from Neveah Ghan, Avery Fuller, Mollie McCoy, and Keeley Beary several of which were set up by Isabel Cervantes. Eureka responded going on a 7-1 run of their own tie the game, 8-8. Two kills from Fuller both facilitated by Madeline Hopson and a service ace put Scots back in a lead they would not lose, 12-10. Red Devils pulled close on two Lyon errors, 12-11, but a 3-0 run fueled by a kill from Ghan assisted by Cervantes and two errors made it 16-12. Scots offense did not let up as another run 5-0 came on with kills from Beary and McCoy facilitated by Cervantes, a Locke ace, and an error by the Red Devils, 21-13. A crucial ace from Hopson made it 24-15 and Scots took the set on a Fuller kill assisted by Hopson. 

The second set got off to a similar start as the first with Scots being up, 6-0. This was off multiple attack errors by the Red Devils, a Cristen Cleveland service ace, and a kill from Beary. Eureka would respond but kills from McCoy and a Olivia Locke service aces get the Scots in the lead, 8-2. The Red Devils would close the lead to three off kills and errors by the Scots, 9-6. An ace from Beary and four errors would expand Lyon's lead to seven 14-7. Eureka not down would close the lead again to just three, 14-11. Teams would put up 3-3 sets between them with Lyon scoring off of a Cervantes kill and two service aces, 17-14. A kill from Ghan set up by Cervantes made it 19-16. Devils would close within one point, 20-19, but a 3-0 run off kills from Beary, Cleveland, and a block by Fuller and Cleveland would put Scots on top, 23-19. Eureka would take the lead late off a 6-1 run, 25-24. Cervantes would deal some of the last blows with a kill assisted by Hopson and an ace. Eureka would give the game to the Scots on a setting error. 

Lyon was down in the third set,7-5, off kills and errors. A kill from McCoy facilitated by Locke and two kills set up by Hopson driven in by Cervantes and Fuller tied the set, 9-9. Scots got the lead on kills from Ghan and Reyleigh Twist, 13-11. Locke would drive in two aces and Beary would deliver another kill to take Scots lead to five, 17-12. Two back-to-back Red Devil errors set up Hopson for an ace, 20-14. Eureka would score three off a kill and errors but a kill from Beary keep Scots lead to five, 21-16. Hopson would set up for kills from Cervantes and Fuller, 23-17. Eureka would have 4-0 run started off a block, two kills, and an error to make it 24-21. Cervantes would drive in the final kill with Hopson on the assist to sweep the Red Devils. 

Cervantes led the team in total points (11), aces (5), and assists (17). She contributed six kills and four digs. Beary led the team in kills having eight, she also contributed one ace and three digs. Cleveland and Fuller lead the team in blocks each having one. Cleveland added two kills, one ace, and six digs. Fuller tallied six kills, one ace, and one dig. Defensively, Locke was at the head of the team with 12 digs. She contributed four service aces and two assists. 

Scots will travel to Louisville, Kentucky  to face the Spalding Golden Eagles and Webster University from Friday, September 26 to Saturday, September 27.
