Scots break even in Day Two of Millsaps Invitational

Jackson, MS - Wrapping up Day Two of the Millsaps Invitational, Lyon volleyball broke even, going 1-1. Scots got the win over the University of Dallas in a four set comeback nail-biter (25-12, 25-14, 16-26, 25-20), but dropped to Millsaps College (13-25, 21-25, 19-25). With Saturday's results Lyon went 2-2 for the tournament and is now 3-6 on the year. 

Below are recaps of both matches
Lyon 3, Dallas 1 

Scots dominated the first set, with a service ace from Rayleigh Twist and errors by the Crusaders kicking the match off, 4-2. Three key kills by Mollie McCoy, a service ace from Caroline Snow, and a kill from Cristen Cleveland assisted by Olivia Locke put the Scots in a excellent position, 10-4. Two kills coming from Twist and Fuller kept the pressure on Dallas, while aces from Madeline Hopson and Locke secured the ten point lead, 16-6. Crusaders closed Lyon's lead to only seven points with a kill and two errors, 16-9. A block by Keeley Beary and Cleveland stopped the Crusaders offense and two back-to-back aces from Twist put the hurt on Dallas, 20-9. A 5-2 run would end set one with Hopson setting up kills for Fuller and Abigail Martin, Martin would deliver the final kill to take set one, 25-12. 

Early in the second, teams were tied 3-3 with all Lyon points coming off errors by the Crusaders. Hopson would make the first strike landing a kill assisted by Beary, 4-3. Kills from Cleveland and McCoy would bring the lead to three, 7-4. An error by the Scots followed by a Crusaders kill would close the lead to only one point, 7-6. However Dallas would make their fourth error of the set to put the ball back in Lyon's hands. Scots would take this opportunity to go on a 10-2 run with a Cleveland service ace kicking things off. What followed were two kills from McCoy and Fuller assisted by Snow, a kill from Beary, two blocks, both involving Beary but one with McCoy and the other with Fuller, and several errors by Dallas to make it 18-9. Crusaders would respond with 4-1 run off kills and an error, 19-12. A kill from Beary set up by Hopson would extended the lead to eight, but two errors would widen the gap further, 22-12. Scots would take set two with an error by Dallas, a kill from Claire Carothers facilitated by Twist, and the 11th Crusaders error of the set. 

Scots were down early in the third, 5-2, off defensive plays at the net and service aces by the Crusaders. A kill by Beary assisted by Hopson and a kill from McCoy assisted by Snow closed the lead to three, 7-4. Errors from Lyon and Dallas would make it 10-6. Crusaders went on a 6-0 run to widen their lead, 16-6. Scots would battle back on a 7-1 run with Hopson playing a crucial role facilitating four kills, Beary would contribute a kill as well, and Fuller sent a service ace to close the lead to four, 18-14. Snow's ace would make it 20-16, but a 5-0 Crusaders run would give them the set. 

Fourth and final set began with the Scots down early again as that Dallas defense and offense made plays, 6-0. Scots came alive on a 3-1 run with a Fuller kill assisted by Hopson, error by the Crusaders, and a service ace from Fuller making it 7-3. Teams traded blows, 11-6, then kills from Twist assisted by Snow and Cleveland assisted by Hopson closed the Crusaders lead to three, 11-8. An error by Lyon set up a 4-0 Dallas run to make it 15-8. Scots respond with a 7-1 run with kills from Fuller, Beary, and Cleveland, a Chaney McCance service ace, and Dallas errors making contributions, 16-15. Teams would tie,16-16, after another Fuller service ace. Scots would take the lead after a key block from Martin and Cleveland, kills from Cleveland and McCoy assisted by Snow, and errors by the Crusaders, 22-17. Dallas would close the lead to three, 22-19, but an error widen it again, 23-19. Locke's service ace would take the set and the match for Lyon. 

Fuller lead the team in points (11.5) and service aces (4), she contributed seven kills, one block, and five digs. Cleveland led the team in kills (9), she contributed one assist, two blocks, and three digs. Beary led in blocks (3), she contributed six kills, two assists, and two digs. Hopson fueled the offense with 16 assists, she contributed one kill, one ace, and nine digs. Locke lead the team in digs (15), she added three assists and two service aces. 

 
Lyon 0, Millsaps 3 

Millsaps jumped out to 5-0 lead to start the first set. A kill from Fuller assisted by Hopson was followed by two errors by the Majors, 5-3. Millsaps would respond with 7-1 run with kills, errors, and aces making the difference, 12-4. Scots would fight with a kill by Cleveland assisted by Snow and a block by Twist and Martin to make it 15-7. Millsaps would add to their lead with a 4-1 run off kills, aces, and errors, 19-8. A block from Fuller and ace by Hopson would bring it to 19-11. Teams would trade point with Lyons coming off a block by Beary and Fuller as well as a kill by Fuller assisted by Hopson, 21-13. Majors would take the set 25-13 with kills, an ace, and an error delivering the final blow. 

Scots played the second set close starting things off up 3-2 off a Beary kill and a block by Beary and McCoy. Majors would respond to make it 5-3, a Locke kill would close the lead to only one point,5-4, but an error and kill put Millsaps in the lead, 7-4. A 5-0 run by Lyon with kills from Fuller, Cleveland, and ace by Hopson made it 9-7. Twist maintained Scots lead with a kill assisted by Hopson, 11-9. An offensive 5-0 run by the Majors put them out in front, 14-12. Play at the net by Beary and Twist would tie it 14-14, but a 5-1 Majors run would put them in the lead again 19-15. Cutting Millsaps lead to five Fuller fired in another kill with Snow on the assist, 22-17. Scots offense fought till the end with kills from Fuller and Isabel Cervantes making it 24-21. Majors took set two on an error. 

Third set started well for the Scots with Fuller tallying two kills assisted by Hopson and Twist along with a Cleveland service ace, 3-0.Majors responded but a key kill from Fuller kept the Scots in the lead 4-3. Scots now up 6-3, Millsaps went on a 7-0 run to make it 10-6. A kill from Beary, Cleveland, and ace by Locke made it 12-10. Teams would trade points back and forth with Cleveland contributing two kills during that time. Now 18-13, a block by Twist and Beary would close Millsaps lead to four points. A 4-1 run by the Majors would make it 24-16, Scots would score again on errors and kill by Fuller, 24-19. Millsaps would take the set and the match on a final kill. 

Fuller led the team in kills (10), she contributed one block and one dig. Hopson facilitated the offense with 12 assists and led in service aces (2). Beary led the team in blocks (4), she contributed two digs and four kills. Locke lead the team in digs (13), she contributed one kill, service, and assist. 

Lyon Scots volleyball will return home to Batesville, AR hosting the University of the Ozarks on Tuesday, September 16 at 6:00 PM.
