EUREKA, Illinois - The Lyon College softball Scots swept a SLIAC doubleheader from Eureka College on cold and blustery Wednesday afternoon.
The Scots (6-18, 2-2) won the first game 6-1 and run-ruled Eureka 12-2 in a five-inning second game.
In the first game, Eureka held a 1-0 lead after the first inning, but in the top of the second,
Ohnrie Bergman put down a sacrifice bunt to score
Brianna Morquecho and tie the game at 1-1.
In the top of the third,
Olivia Orf singled to right center to score
Anna Voth to give the Scots a 2-1 lead.
In the top of the fifth, MK Duffield singled through the right side to score
Sophie Varela, then Orf hit a two-run homer to center field that scored pinch-runner
Gabby Thomas.
Skylar Foreman grounded out to second, but Ashley Able scored on the play to make it 6-1.
Sydney Lasher was the winning pitcher. She went seven full innings, gave up four hits and one unearned run. She walked two and struck out eight of 26 batters she faced.
In the second game, Lyon College started off with six runs in the top of the first inning.
Varela walked to lead off and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Varela stole third base and
Anna Voth walked. Voth advanced on a wild pitch and Varela scored on the play for a 1-0 lead. Duffield drew a walk, then Voth scored when Orf grounded out. Duffield went to third on a wild pitch and Abel lined out second base for the second out. Morquecho walked and advanced to second on a passed ball, then Foreman walked. Morquecho and Foreman stole up a base and Duffield stole home to make it 3-0. After that, Bergman singled to left field to score Morquecho and Foreman and Bergman advanced to second on the throw to home plate.
Fallon Lancaster singled to center field to bring in Bergman for a 6-0 Scots lead.
In the top of the second, Voth led off with a double to left field. Duffield followed with a single up the middle to bring Voth home for a 7-0 lead.
Eureka scored a run in the bottom of the third, but the Scots answered in the top of the fourth inning. Varela led off with a single up the middle. Voth put down a sacrifice bunt and Duffield doubled to left center field to score Varela. Orf flied out to center field and Duffield advanced to third base, then Abel singled through the left side to score Duffield to make it 9-1.
In the top of the fifth,
Kennedy Cox singled to left field,
Reece Montgomery singled to left field and
Emily Martinez singled to left field to load the bases.
Rebecca Rodriguez doubled to left field to bring in Cox and Montgomery. Duffield hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Martinez and advance Rodriguez to third base, then Orf hit into a fielder's choice that got Rodriguez out at the plate, but the Scots led 12-1.
Eureka got one more run in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the game was ended by the run-rule on the last out.
Georgia Holzer was the winning pitcher for Lyon College. She went five innings, gave up five hits and two runs, walked one and struck out three of the 21 batters she faced.
The Scots move on to Greenville, Illinois for another SLIAC doubleheader with the Panthers on Thursday, beginning at 1 p.m.
