Duffield's grand slam highlights Scots' softball doubleheader split with Westminster

BATESVILLE, Arkansas - The Lyon College softball Scots split a SLIAC doubleheader with the Westminster Blue Jays on Sunday afternoon at Howard and Mary House Field in Batesville.

The Scots (8-22, 4-6) lost the first game 4-0, but a grand slam home run from MK Duffield highlighted a 15-6 win for Lyon College in Game 2.

In the first game, the Scots only got five hits and were shut out by Westminster pitching. Ohnrie Bergman had two hits, while Sophie Varela, Skylar Foreman and Georgia Holzer had one hit each in the loss.
Holzer was the losing pitcher. She went seven innings and gave up seven hits and four runs, while striking out six batters.

In the second game, the Scots scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Varela led off by reaching first on an error, Anna Voth beat out an infield single and advanced Varela to second. Varela was caught stealing third and Duffield drew a walk. Foreman reached on a fielder's choice that got Voth out at third base, but Holzer singled to left field and loaded up the bases.
Rebecca Rodriguez walked to bring in Duffield, Olivia Orf walked to score Foreman, the Bergman doubled to center field to bring in Holzer and Rodriguez for a 4-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Varela led off with a double to left field. With one out, Duffield singled to center and Foreman followed with a double off the fence in center field to score Varela. With two outs, Rodriguez walked again and Orf doubled to center field to score Duffield and Foreman. Bergman singled to center field to score Rodriguez and Orf to make it a 9-0 lead for Lyon College. 

In the bottom of the third, Varela led off with a single to left field, Voth advanced her with a sacrifice bunt and Varela stole third base. Foreman singled to left field to score Varela and make it a 10-0 Scots lead.

Westminster scored four times in the top of the fourth inning.
But Lyon College added five more runs in the bottom of the inning to lead 15-4.
With two outs, Bergman doubled to left center field, Ashley Abel singled to left center field and Varela walked. Reece Montgomery drew a base-loaded walk to score Bergman and that set up a grand slam home run over the right field fence by Duffield that made the score 15-4.
Foreman followed with a single to right center and Holzer got a base hit. Rodriguez was hit by a pitch to re-load the bases, but a pop out ended the inning.

Westminster added two runs in the top of the fifth inning, but the run rule ended the game for the Scots.

Sydney Lasher was the winning pitcher for Lyon College. She went five innings, gave up five hits and six runs, while striking out one.

The Scots will be on the road next week to Fontbonne on Friday, April 18, to Blackburn College on Saturday, April 19 and to Hendrix College on April 21. Lyon College returns home to Howard and Mary House field on April 26th for a doubleheader with Principia College.
