Scots softball drops doubleheader at Mission University

OZARK, Missouri - The Lyon College softball Scots traveled to Mission University and played a doubleheader with the Patriots at the Ozark Mountain Sports Complex in Ozark.

The Scots (4-15) lost the first game 6-2 and lost the second game 7-5.

In the first game, Mission led 3-0 by the bottom of the third inning. However, in the top of the fourth inning, Anna Voth reached on an error, then MK Duffield singled to right field. With runners at first and second, Olivia Orf singled to right field to bring in Voth and make it a 3-1 game. 
The Scots got another run in the top of the fifth inning when Soni Beene reached first on an error and advanced to second on the over throw to first. Sophie Varela doubled to right field and Beene scored to make it 3-2. Voth had a single and later one Rebecca Rodrigues got on base with a hit.
Mission scored three more times in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead 6-2.
In the top of the seventh, Lyon College put together a threat. With two outs, Voth singled to left field, Duffield walked and Orf reached on an error to load the bases, but a strike out ended the game.
Georgia Holzer was the losing pitcher in the contest. She threw 6.0 innings, gave up 13 hits and six runs. She walked two and struck out one of the 30 batters she faced.

In the second game, Varela led off with a single to left field and Voth sacrificed her to second. Varela went to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch to give the Scots a 1-0 lead. Duffield doubled to left field, but she was left stranded at third base after a ground out and a fly out.
Mission came back to score three runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead.Then the Patriots added three more runs in the bottom of the second inning to lead 6-1.
Lyon College came back to cut the lead in half when Voth was hit by a pitch with one out and that set up a 2-run homer from Duffield over the left-center field fence. Skylar Foreman followed with a single to center field and with two outs, Holzer reached first on an error. Both Foreman and Holzer moved up on a passed ball and Rodriguez walked to load the bases. A fly ball caught in right field ended the top of the third with Mission leading 6-3.
The Scots closed the gap even more in the top of the fourth inning when Emily Martinez singled to left field to lead off. Varela reached on an error and Voth walked to load the bases. Duffield singled to left field to bring in Martinez and Foreman hit a deep sacrifice fly ball to left field that scored Varela to make it 6-5, but a ground out and a strike out ended the threat.
Mission added another run in the bottom of the fifth to lead by two runs. 
Madison DeRoussel suffered the loss for Lyon College. She pitched 1.2 innings and gave up eight hits and six runs of the 12 batters she faced. Sydney Lasher came in to pitch the remaining 4.1 innings and gave up only three hits and one run, while striking out two of the 18 batters she faced.

The Scots are on the road to MUW for a SLIAC-opening double-header in Columbus, Mississippi on Friday.
