BATESVILLE, Arkansas - The Lyon College Scots softball team lost both games of a double-header against Hendrix College on Friday afternoon at Howard and Mary House Field in Batesville, 8-5 in an eight-inning first game, then fought back to lose 8-5 in the second game of the day.
The Scots (2-4) trailed 1-0 after the top of the fourth inning, but in the bottom of the fifth, MK Duffield singled to left field to bring in
Brianna Morquecho to tie the game.
Rebecca Rodriguez followed with a single to left field to score pinch-runner
Gabby Thomas, who was running for Duffield, to give Lyon College a 2-1 lead.
Hendrix tied the game in the top of the sixth inning and went ahead 3-2 in the top of the seventh inning. However, Rodriguez doubled to left center to score Varela and tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh.Â
In the top of the eighth, Hendrix scored five times to go up 8-3. Lyon fought back with
Olivia Orf scoring when Morquecho reached first on an error. Varela followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in
Skylar Foreman to make it 8-5.
Morquecho had two hits, scored a run and had a run batted in. Varela scored a run, had one hit and one RBI,
Anna Voth walked once, Dufifeld was 2-for-4 with two hits and one run scored; Rodriguez had two hits on four at-bats and had two runs batted in. Orf was 1-for-3 with one run scored and one walk. Foreman went 2-for-3 at the plate with one run scored.
Rodriguez and Foreman each had one double, while Varela and Thomas both had one stole base.
Pitcher
Georgia Holzer (1-2) was 1-for-4 with a hit and pitched eight full innings. She allowed 11 hits, eight runs, seven of which were earned, walked two batters and struck out two of the 37 Hendrix batters she faced.
In the second game, Hendrix led 2-0 before the Scots scored in the top of the third inning when Varela reached first on a throwing error that allowed
Callie Marberry to score.Â
Hendrix led 8-1 by the top of the fifth inning, but in the bottom of the sixth, Foreman doubled to right field to bring in Rodriguez and Duffield to make it 8-3.
In the bottom of the seventh, Voth singled in Varela, who tripled to lead off the inning, and Rodriguez got a sacrifice ground out to first that scored Voth to make it 8-5.
In the second game, Varela was 1-for4 with a run scored, had a hit and an RBI. Voth was 1-for-4 with a hit, a run scored and an RBI. Duffield went 1-for-3 with a run scored, Rodriguez scored a run and had an RBI, Orf was 1-for 3 with a walk, Foreman went 1-for-4 with two runs batted in, Marberry was 1-for-1 with a run scored and
Fallon Lancaster was 2-for-4 that included two singles.Â
Duffield and Forman both had doubles in the game, Varela tripled and Orf had a stolen base.
Sydney Lasher started the game on the mound for the Scots and went four innings. She allowed 10 hits, eight runs, seven of them were earned, walked one and struck out one of the 23 batters she faced.
Madison DeRoussel came in to pitch three innings and she gave up three hits from the 13 batters she faced.
The Scots take on Crowley's Ridge on Saturday in a double-header at Howard and Mary House Field.
