BATESVILLE, Arkansas -
Garrett Graef led off the bottom of the eighth inning of a scheduled seven inning game against Howard Payne in Game 1 with a single up the middle and scored with two outs when
Slade Inman hit a walk-off single to center field that led the Scots to a 15-14 win at Fred Wann Field on Friday night.
The Scots (4-4) banged out 17 hits in the slug-fest that last all of three hours.Â
Trailing 4-0 after the top of the first inning,
Kooper McCoy singled up the middle to bring in
Braden Hendrix.
Ashton Compton followed with a base hit to center and Inman crossed the plate. Landon Swallon followed with a double to center field to bring in McCoy, then
Walker Smith singled down the left field line to bring in Compton and Swallow.
Andrew James doubled down the right field line to score Smith and give Lyon College a 6-4 lead.
In the bottom of the second inning
Eli Marcotte hit a three-run homer that brought in Compton and McCoy for a 9-5 Scots lead. However, Howard Payne came back in the third and fourth innings to go up 13-9.
In the bottom of the fourth, Graef singled through the left side to score Marcotte and Swallow, then James hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in Smith and Inman scored Graef on a sacrifice ground out to tie the game 13-13.
Howard Payne took a 14-13 lead in the top of the sixth inning, but Marcotte doubled down the left field line in the bottom of the seventh to score
Caleb Collins and tie the game at 14-14.
That set up the Inman's and Graef's heroics in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Hendrix went 2-for-5 at the plate with a run scored, Inman was 1-of-6 with one run scored had two runs batted in. McCoy was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and had an RBI. Collins scored a run, Compton was 1-for-3 with two runs scored, had an RBI and walked once.
Marcotte went 4-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored and four RBIs, Swallow was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a run batted in, Smith went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs and James was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.
Macotte, Swallow, Smith and James each doubled in the game. Marcotte had a three-run homer, while Hendrix and McCoy had two stole bases each, and Compton and Graef had one stolen base each. Hendrix and Swallow were hit by pitches.
Patrick Babcock started on the mound for the Scots and gave up six hits, nine runs, walked three and had three strike outs in three innings of work.
Nick Dennington pitched for two outs and gave up three hits, four runs, walked one and had one strike out.
Braden Anderson came in to pitch two innings and allowed two hits and one run, while walking two and striking out three batters of the 10 he faced.
Kenny Jennings (1-0) picked up the win for the Scots by going the final 2.1 innings. Jennings did not allow a hit or run and struck out three of seven batters he faced.
Game 2 results will be published later tonight.
The Scots play a single game with Howard Payne on Saturday afternoon at Fred Wann Field.
