Lyon College splits home doubleheader against Ozarks

BATESVILLE, Arkansas -- A beautiful, sunny day at Fred Wann Field saw an absolute storm of hits and runs scored on Tuesday afternoon, as the Scots split their doubleheader against the University of the Ozarks.

Game one of today's doubleheader had its first pitch at 1:00 PM, and Ozarks grabbed an early 2-0 lead at the top of the first off a Tabor Childs RBI double. Childs would later come around to score on an error, leaving the Scots trailing 2-0 going into the bottom of the frame.

The Scots answered swiftly, scoring four runs off a pair of two-run doubles by Kooper McCoy and Landon Swallow, giving the Scots led 4-2 after the end of the first inning.

The Eagles would then score six unanswered runs over the next two innings, giving them an 8-4 lead over Lyon College. Swallow would put up three RBIs over his following two at bats, but the Scots still trailed 9-7 through four frames.

Ozarks would then go on to score ten unanswered runs over the following two innings, leading 18-7. The Scots then put up six unanswered runs of their own to close the offensive slug fest, but it would prove not enough as the Scots would fall in game one, 18-13.

The Scots used five pitchers in the game, giving up 18 runs (16 earned), 18 hits, five walks, and four strikeouts, collectively.

Offensively for the Scots, Swallow led the way with five RBIs, McCoy and Slade Inman each had two, and Ashton Compton and Logan Lightner each had one RBI per piece. Inman led the way in total hits with four, while Swallow, Compton, and Andrew James each had three. McCoy had two hits, and Lightner, Eli Marcotte, and Braden Hendrix each had one hit.

Game two began with first pitch commencing shortly after 4:00 PM.

Just like in game one, the Scots fell behind early 2-0 after a two-run double by Eagles' designated hitter, Michael White.

The Scots answered quickly and convincingly, putting up three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-2 lead after the opening frame.

Lyon College closed the door on Ozarks in the bottom of the second inning with a remarkable twelve runs scored, giving the Scots an emphatic 15-2 lead through two. The Scots would tack on three more during the game, leading to a resounding 18-4 bounce back victory over the Eagles.

Freshman Conrad Muir made his collegiate debut in the win, pitching five strong innings, including three consecutive scoreless frames in the second, third, and fourth. The righty from Frisco, Texas gave up three runs on five hits, also giving up three walks while striking out three batters.
Carter Sprague pitched in relief of Muir in the sixth inning, giving up one run on one hit. Sprague also struck out one batter while issuing one walk.
Andrew James also made his mound debut for the Scots this season, pitching a scoreless seventh inning giving up only a single hit while striking out two, securing the victory for the Scots as well as his first collegiate save.

Offensively for the Scots, Inman and Compton led with RBIs a piece, while McCoy, Hendrix and Swallow each had two. James, Garrett Graef, Walker Smith, and Landon Ray each had one RBI in the game as well. In the hits category, Hendrix led with four, while Inman had three. James, Compton, Marcotte, and Swallow each collected two hits, while McCoy had one.

In total, both teams combined for 53 total runs on 59 total hits in 14 total innings played, resulting in a split. The Scots record moves up to 3-4 on the season following the split.

Lyon College baseball will return to action this Friday when they host Howard Payne University for a three-game series at home, beginning with game one of a doubleheader on Friday afternoon at 3:00 PM.
