Batesville, AR - The Lyon College Scots volleyball team dominated the Williams Baptist University Eagles on Dig Pink night (25-10, 25-19, 25-18). With this win Scots are 10-12 on the season and remain 5-5 in conference play.
Scots played well as a team tonight recording 41 kills, 15 service aces, five blocks, 40 assists, 44 digs, and hit for .316.
Scots handled the Eagles in the first set with the first points coming off a
Madeline Hopson service ace and kill by
Reyleigh Twist set up be Hopson. Down 3-2, Lyon would go on a 13-0 run scoring defensively off blocks by
Isabel Cervantes,
Keeley Beary, and
Avery Fuller. As well as offensively with kills coming from Cervantes, Fuller, and
Cristen Cleveland all of which where set up by Hopson. On this run
Sofia Santis would also record three service aces. With Scots on top, 15-3, Fuller would drive in two more kills,
Morgan Harrelson and Cleveland would lay down a block, and Cervantes would send an ace to the floor. Not letting
Mollie McCoy drove in two kills to Lyon out ahead, 23-7. Cervantes would drive in the final kill off a Williams Baptist blocking error, 25-10.
Second set was closer at the start with five ties taking place early. Both teams exchanged points back and forth with Cleveland and McCoy recording kills, while Cervantes notched another service ace, 6-4 Scots lead. Eagles on a quick 3-0 run would take the lead briefly off a kill, block, and error, 7-6. McCoy assisted by Cervantes would tally two more kills to take the lead, 9-8, Scots would not lose the lead again following this. Cleveland with the assist from Fuller would send a kill to the hardwood, 15-12. McCoy would record another kill and Cleveland would put down a crucial service ace, 17-13. Eagles would cut the lead to only three but a
Claire Carothers kill would extend the lead, 19-15. Final kills from Beary and Cleveland assisted by Hopson would take the set, 25-19.
Although Scots were up 2-0 on the Eagles they remained competitive in the third and final set. Lyon found itself down early but overcame this with four point run scoring off a kill from Cleveland, an error by Williams Baptist, and two back-to-back service aces from Carothers, 4-3. Eagles would tie it, but a kill from Beary would hand Scots back lead for a brief moment before an error knotted things up, 5-5. Three points from kills by Cervantes,
Morgan Harrelson, and an error would be matched by the Eagles, 8-8. Lyon would separate off two kills from McCoy, two aces from Cleveland, and a kill from Carothers, 13-9. Though Williams Baptist battled back off kills, errors, and an ace to tie it, 14-14. Scots would jump ahead with kills from Beary and Cleveland making the difference, 20-15. A kill from McCoy, ace from Cleveland, and error by the Eagles would put the dagger in. Lyon would take the third set, 25-18.
McCoy led the team with 10 kills, she also contributed one dig. Cleveland led team in service aces with four and tied in digs recording seven. Beary, Cervantes, and Fuller are all tied for leader in total blocks each having two. In addition Beary added eight kills, Cervantes recorded 15 assists, and notched six kills. Hopson ran the offense tallying 21 assists. She also added three digs. Defensively Carothers, Cleveland, and Twist were all tied with seven digs. Carothers added three service aces, two kills, and a block. Twist notched three kills.
Scots will travel to Clarksville, Arkansas to face the University of the Ozarks Eagles on Tuesday, October 28th at 6:00 PM.
