Third set comeback stalls as Scots fall to Webster in three

St. Louis, MO - Down two sets coming into the third, Scots volleyball played competitive with both teams neck-to-neck but late mistakes decided the match. With this loss to the Webster University Gorlocks (20-25, 20-25, 24-26) Lyon is now 9-12 on the year and 5-5 in conference. 

Scots started hot in the first with Mollie McCoy, Cristen Cleveland, and Keeley Beary driving in kills, 6-2. The Gorlocks would respond closing the lead to only one, 6-5. Madeline Hopson would set up Beary for the kill to extend the lead, as a block from Cleveland and kill from Isabel Cervantes make it 10-5. Webster would close the lead again but, McCoy would find the hardwood to make it 13-10. Gorlocks would score five in succession but an ace from Reyleigh Twist would make tie it briefly, 15-15. McCoy would send a kill to the floor to cut the lead to two, 18-16. Down by four points, Fuller would scratch a kill set up by Cervantes to cut the lead to three, 22-19. Three kills would take the first for Webster. 

A block by Cervantes and Beary along with a kill by Fuller set up by Hopson tied it, 3-3, early in the second set. Webster would extend with a 6-0 run off kills, blocks, errors, and aces to make it 9-3. A McCoy kill would cut the lead to five, 10-5. A kill from Cervantes, Fuller, and an error by the Gorlocks made it 14-11, but Gorlocks would extend their lead again. Down six, two attack errors and two back-to-back kills from Fuller kept it close 19-16. A solo block from Beary cut the lead to only two points, 20-18. Beary with the assist from Hopson would drive in a kill, but Webster would follow with one of their own to take the set, 25-20.

In the third kills from Cleveland, McCoy, and Twist would give Scots the lead early, 3-2. Beary and McCoy would block a Gorlocks attack to keep the lead, 4-3. Teams would trade points and tie twice, but kills from Fuller and Twist would make it 10-8. Gorlocks would tie soon after, but a 5-0 runs from Scots with a kill from McCoy, ace from Fuller, and block by Beary and McCoy would put them in front, 15-10. Webster would close the lead, but kills from Twist, Cervantes, and Claire Carothers set up by Hopson would give the Scots a two point lead, 19-17. A kill from McCoy assisted by Twist would tie it, 21-21. Teams would trade back-and-forth with a kill from Cervantes taking the lead, 24-23. Two errors by the Scots and a kill by the Gorlocks would end the set and match with Webster taking it 3-0. 

McCoy and Fuller lead the team in kills each recording ten. McCoy contributed two blocks and two digs. Fuller also lead the team in aces and contributed three digs.Twist also lead the team in aces with one and was the team leader in digs recording eight.  She added five kills and one assist. Beary was the leader in blocks with four, she also notched four kills, one assist, and two digs. Hopson facilitated the offense tallying 17 assists, she added four digs. 

Scots will return to Batesville for their Dig Pink match as they face the Williams Baptist College Eagles on Tuesday, October 21 at 6:30 PM.
