BATESVILLE, Arkansas -
Natalya Kaza scored 20 points,
Molly Mason added 19 points and 16 rebounds, and
Savanna Lopez scored 16 points and had 14 rebounds, but 26 uncharacteristic turnovers cost the Lyon College Scots in a 75-69 home loss to Principia in SLIAC play at Becknell Gymnasium.
The Scots (6-7, 3-3) also got scoring from
Alexis Shelton with seven points,
Dalye Hambelton had four points and 11 assists and
Haven Cooper had three points and six rebounds. Also playing was
Savannah Stout, Jewell Walley and
Emily Walley in the contest.Â
The Scots trailed 25-14 after the first quarter, but battled back to outscore Principia 21-18 in the second period and trailed 43-35 at halftime. Lyon College came back in the third quarter to tie the game at 47-47 at the 5:09 mark on a layup from Kaza. It the scoring of Kaza, Lopez and Mason that put Lyon College on a 10-2 run to tie the game at that time. Principia edged out to another six point lead, but with 2:16 left in the third quarter, Kaza put in another layup to tie the game at 53-53,. The Panthers led 58-53 by the end of the period.
The Scots were down by as much as 11 points in the fourth quarter and fought back on two three-pointers from Mason to close the gap to two points, 71-69 with 2:09 to play. Turnovers and missed shots in the final two minutes forced the Scots to foul and Principia made four straight free throws.Â
Lyon College shot 36 percent from the field and made 6-of-19 three-pointers and 11-of-17 free throws in the game.Â
The Scots host Eureka College on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
