Scots volleyball sweeps 2024 Highlander Classic

BATESVILLE, Arkansas -- The Lyon College women's volleyball team swept all competition in the 2024 Highlander Classic.

It was an action-packed weekend of volleyball at the Highlander Classic inside Becknell Gymnasium. The Scots played host to Williams Baptist University, Mission University, and Bethel University (TN) for the tournament.

The action for the Scots started at 6:30 PM Friday night when they opened up their tournament run against Mission University. The match went four sets, and saw the Scots (4-1) defeat the Patriots (1-12) by a final score of 3-1. Senior outside hitter Kylee Sabella led the Scots in both kills (17) and aces (3) in the match. Sabella and sophomore defensive specialist Marti Flores also shared the leading total in digs (16). Senior middle blocker Samantha Ferguson led in blocks (5) and freshman setter Caroline Snow had a whopping 26 assists. Other notable performances in the match included junior opposite hitter Mollie McCoy with 16 kills along with three blocks, and junior setter Madeline Hopson who garnered 17 assists and an ace.

The Scots followed up with a 3-1 victory over Bethel University (7-2) on Saturday afternoon. Snow had another stellar performance leading the way for the Scots in total assists (22) and aces (3). Flores also played well, putting up 15 digs and seven assists. Sabella led the Scots in total kills (20) and digs (16), while Ferguson once more led in blocks (5). Hopson also had a great outing against Bethel as she garnered 20 assists and 10 digs against the Wildcats. Junior outside hitter Cristen Cleveland and sophomore middle blocker Keeley Beary also played well, collecting 13 and 10 kills, respectively.

The home team capped off a sweep of the 2024 Highlander Classic on Saturday night with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Williams Baptist University (1-10). Sabella and Beary led the way for the Scots in total kills (11), Sabella also led the Scots with a total of five aces. Snow led with 15 total assists, with Hopson right behind her garnering 14 of her own. Cleveland had the most digs (11), with Sabella (10) and Flores (8) not far behind. Senior middle blocker Mikhayla Wright also capped off a solid tournament performance in her own right, collecting the most blocks (3) against the Eagles.

The Lyon College women's volleyball team returns to action next Tuesday, September 10 as they hit the road to take on Central Baptist College for a 7:00 PM start. Their next home match will be a week later on Tuesday, September 17 when they return to Becknell Gymnasium to host Crowleys Ridge College for a 6:00 PM start.
