Box Score GRINNELL, IOWA - Two pick six touchdowns by the Lyon College defense in the fourth quarter coupled with a 164-yard, two touchdown performance by
Jaylin Babers and three touchdown passes from
Joe Galay led the Scots to a resounding 48-28 victory over the Grinnell Pioneers on Saturday afternoon in Iowa.
Lyon College (1-0) scored on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Galay to Reggie Brown II with 7:09 left before halftime to cut Grinnell's lead to 7-6. The Pioneers responded with another score, but
Clifford Washington hauled in a 54-yard touchdown pass from Galay to cut the lead to 14-12 with 4:04 to go in the second quarter. The Pioneers (0-1) scored again in the period to take a 21-12 lead into halftime.
However, the third quarter opened with Babers running for a 5-yard touchdown at the 13:23 mark and Brown II catching a 14-yard touchdown pass from Galay with 9:03 left in the third quarter to put the Scots up 25-21.
Jesus Romero-Castillo added a 29-yard field goal with 4:24 left to make it a 28-21 game. Then the defense rose up with two interceptions for touchdowns.
As the fourth quarter opened, Will Litton intercepted a short pass from the Pioneers and raced 72-yards for the Lyon touchdown. On Grinnell's next series,
Mason Davis intercepted a throw over the middle and returned it 33 yard for another touchdown that put the Scots ahead 41-21.
Grinnell came back midway through the fourth quarter to put up a touchdown, but as the game was winding down, Babers broke up the middle for a 21-yard touchdown to make it 48-28.
Individually, Galay completed 17-of-24 passes for 159 yards and three touchdowns, with one first-half interception. Babers rushed 32 times for 164 yards behind a strong offensive front line that opened holes that allowed him to score two touchdowns. On the receiving end, Brown II had six catches for 32 yards and two touchdowns,
Xavier Long had three catches for 27 yards, Washington had one reception for a 54-yard touchdown,
Thomas Brunston had one catch for 16 yards,
Cedric Allen had two catches for seven yards and
Javarion Williams had one catch for three yards.  Babers added three catches for 18 yards, as well.Â
Defensively,
Michael Wingo had eight tackles (six solo and two assisted), Â Davis had six tackles (four solo and two assisted) with a sack and a 33-yard interception return for a touchdown.
Xiyiah Spencer-Cole had five tackles and Litton had one tackle and a 72-yard interception return for a touchdown. Other leading tacklers for the Scots were
