ST. LOUIS, Missouri - The Lyon College Scots baseball team earned a split in a SLIAC double-header on Saturday afternoon against the Fontbonne Griffins on the road in St. Louis.
The Scots (9-15, 5-3) won the first game in 11 innings 7-6 and lost the second game 12-5.
In the first game,
Garrett Graef doubled to left field in the second inning to score Lane Vangennip for a 1-0 Lyon College lead. The Scots added two more runs in the top of the third inning when
Logan Lightner reached on an error while
Logan Doody and
Caleb Collins scored unearned runs on the play for a 3-0 lead.
Lightner singled in Collins in the top of the fifth inning to make it 4-0 for Lyon, but Fontbonne scored in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it a three-run game.Â
In the top of the eighth,
Jayden Cull singled to center field to score
Ashton Compton, then Collins reached on a fielder's choice to bring in
Braden Hendrix to make it a 6-1 game.Â
Fontbonne added a single run in the bottom of the eighth and tied the game with a four-run bottom of the ninth inning.Â
The Scots won the game in the top of the 11th inning when Lightner singled to right field to bring in
Walker Smith.
In the second game, Lyon College took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Smith singled to left field to score Doody. Lightner reached on a fielder's choice to bring in Collins to make it 2-0. Fontbonne scored one in the bottom of the second inning to cut the lead in half, but Lyon got two more runs in the top of the fourth when Graef homered to left field with Vangennip on base ahead of him to make it a 4-1 lead.Â
By the time the fourth inning was over, Fontbonne led 5-4.Â
Lightner hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Cull and tie the game, but Fontbonne had a 2-run homer in the fifth and a 3-run homer in the seventh to break open the game.
