FULTON, Missouri -
Sophie Varela scored the game-winning run for the Lyon College Scots off a
Chloe McCance sacrifice fly in a 3-2, 9-inning win in Game 1 of a SLIAC double-header against the Westminster Blue Jays in Fulton on Saturday afternoon.
The Scots (11-11, 4-2) got a 4-for-4 performance from
Olivia Orf in a 13-2 win over the Blue Jays in Game 2. Lyon College had a 7-2 lead and put six runs in the top of the seventh inning to break the game open.
Lyon threatened in the top of the first inning of Game 1 when
Anna Voth singled to left field with one out. McCance had a base hit to left field and Orf singled to center to load the bases. A pop out to the short stop and a line out to center field ended the inning with three runners left on base.
On the mound for the Scots,
McKenzie Campbell, who got the win and had a season-high 15 strikeouts, started the day by striking out the Westminster side in the bottom of the first inning. She led off with a single in the top of the second, but was eventually out at third base on a fielder's choice play.
In the third inning, Orf was hit by a pitch with two outs,
Trinity Arrambide beat out an infield single and
Skylar Foreman got a base hit to center field to load the base paths. A strikeout ended the threat.
Lyon College finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning when Arrambide singled to right field with one out and stole second base. M.K. Duffield got a base hit to right field and Arrambide scored on the play for a 1-0 lead.Â
The Scots got their second run in the top of the sixth inning when
Whitney Mitchell was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. After she stole second, she went to third on a ground out from Varela. Voth beat out a squeeze bunt that scored Mitchell to make it 2-0.Â
Westminster scored two runs to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Finally in the top of the ninth with international tie-breaking rules in place, Varela was placed on second base and Voth moved her to third base with a sacrifice bunt ot the right side of the infield. McCance hit a sacrifice fly to center field and Varela scored on the play to make it 3-2 before a ground out ended the inning.Â
 The Scots scored first when Orf singled to left field to bring in Voth for a 1-0 lead in the first inning.Â
Michell reached on a fielder's choice and
Georgia Holzer scored, then Varela hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Arrambide. McCance followed with a single to right-center to score Jada King for a 4-0 Lyon College lead.
Duffield hit a sacrifice fly to score Orf in the top of the third inning and Voth grounded out to short and Mitchell scored on the play for a 6-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning. In the sixth, Holzer doubled to left-center to score King, then the Scots scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning.
With one out, Orf singled to center field, Duffield hit the ball to center field,
Sydney Lasher walked to load the bases and Arrambide singled to left field to bring in Orf. King reached on a fielder's choice that brought in Duffield and Mitchell doubled down the left field line to clear the bases. King, Arrambide and Lasher scored.
Mitchell went to third on a passed ball and scored when Kyra Skelton grounded out to second base to make it a 13-2 game.Â
