Scots baseball scores 26 runs in SLAIC sweep of Westminster

BATESVILLE, Arkansas - Logan Lightner and Braden Hendrix highlighted the Lyon College Scots SLIAC sweep over the Westminster Blue Jay at Fred Wann Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Lightner hit a solo homer over the right field wall to start a five-run inning that propelled the Scots to a 12-5 win in Game 1. 
Hendrix blasted a grand slam home run in a 6-run second for the Scots that sent them to a 14-4 win in seven innings.

The Scots (13-16, 9-3) keep pressure on the leader of the conference Spalding, who is undefeated at 10-0. Lyon College has a 4-game set this weekend with the Blackburn Beavers in Carlinville, Illinois.

Lyon trailed 1-0 in the first game until Lightner singled in Ashton Compton in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 1-1. Westminster put up four runs in the top of the sixth inning, but the Scots put together a rally of their own and scored four runs.
Caleb Collins singled to right field and the Westminster right fielder mishandled the ball and let it roll to the fence. Meanwhile, Jayden Cull and Logan Doody scored on the play. Garrett Graef hit a sacrifice grounder that brought in Collins and Lightner followed with a double to right center to score Compton and tie the game at 5-5.

In the bottom of the seventh, Collins singled to right center to score Hendrix,then Compton singled up the middle to score Collins for a 7-5 Lyon College lead.

In the eighth, Lightner hit a high homer to right field. Doody singled to right center to bring in Walker Smith and Hendrix, then Graef doubled down teh left field line to score Doody and Collins to make it 12-5.

Brayden Anderson picked up the win after coming in during the sixth inning in relief of starter Ayden Heitmann. Anderson threw 3.2 innings and allowed two hits to go with three strikeouts. 

The Scots took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Doody hit a sacrifice fly to right field and scored Smith. Collins put down a bunt single and advanced to second on a error by the Westminster third baseman. Cull scored on the play for a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Compton and Lane Vangennip walked  and Lightner reached on a fielder's choice that got Vangennip was out at second. Lightner stole second and Smith walked to load the bases. That set up Hendrix' grand slam. Cull followed with a single down the left field line and Collins reached on an error and both runners moved up on a passed ball. Graef walked to load up the bases again and Compton doubled to left center to bring in Cull and Collins for an 8-0 lead.

Westminster scored one run in the top of the third, but the Scots scored three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Collins walked, Graef was hit by a pitch and Vangennip singled through the right side to score Collins with one out. Vangennip stole second and went to third on an over throw to the base. Graef scored on the play. 
Lightner was hit by a pitch, Smith reached on a fielder's choice that scored Vangennip to make it 11-1.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Doody led off with a double to right center field. Collins moved him over to third with a sacrifice bunt. Graef hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Doody for a 12-1 Scots lead.

Westminster scored three runs in the top of the sixth, but Lyon College answered half of the inning. Lightner led off with a walk, Hendrix singled with one out and Cull singled to left center to bring in Lightner. Thomas Lingren was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Collins hit a sacrifice fly to score Hendrix for a 14-4.

Blair Francis picked up the win for the Scots going seven innings and allowing four runs to go with three strike outs.
