BATESVILLE, Arkansas -
Garrett Graef's three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning of Game 2 against the 17-time SLIAC regular-season champions, Webster Gorlocks, changed the spectrum of Scots baseball this year.
On Saturday afternoon at Fred Wann Field in Batesville, Graef's homer and the pitching of
Cameron Gordon was enough momentum to overtake the legendary team in the second game to earn the split.
The Scots (8-14, 4-2) lost Game 1 to the Gorlocks 12-1 in eight innings. Lyon College had five hits in the first game, but allowed three Webster home runs. Trailing 5-0 into the bottom of the fourth,
Logan Doody led off with a double down the left field line.
Caleb Collins advanced Doody to third on a fly ball to center field, which set up a single from
Walker Smith that scored Doody.Â
Patrick Babcock suffered his first loss of the season on the mound in Game 1. He went four innings, gave up eight hits and eight runs.
Tyler Davis,
Carter Sprague and
Rhett Crafton all pitched in the game.
In the second game, Gordon pitched eight full innings and allowed eight hits and two runs. He struck out five and kept the 12-time SLIAC tournament champions off balance and flustered.
Offensively in the bottom of the first,
Ashton Compton got on base with a lead-off walk and was left stranded. In the bottom of the second, Collings singled up the middle, but was out on a double-play by the Gorlocks.Â
Webster took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning, but Lyon College came back to tie the game when
Braden Hendrix doubled down the left field line and when to third when Cull hit a sacrifice grounder to first base. With two outs, Collins put down and beat ou ta perfectly placed bunt-single to score Hendrix on the squeeze.Â
Lyon threatened in the bottom of the fifth inning when
Logan Lightner led off with a single to right-center field and Lane Vangennip got a base hit to left-center. A double-play allowed Lightner to go to third, but a ground out ended the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Lightner singled to center with one out. Vangernnip got a base hit to left-center and Graef homered to left field to put the Scots up 4-1.Â
Webster scored another run in the top of the eighth, but Gordon fought off the Gorlock's threat and got out of the jam.
David Jennings came into get the save for the Scots by throwing the top of the ninth and striking out the last batter he faced.
