BATESVILLE, Arkansas -
Olivia Orf hit a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead the Lyon College past the visiting Blackburn Beavers in game one of a SLIAC double-header, then Orf delivered a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two to give the Scots the sweep.
Lyon College (9-9, 2-0)
McKenzie Campbell got the win from the mound in game one by scattering four hits and one run over seven innings of work. Campbell struck out Blackburn 12 times.
Early on,
Sophie Varela led off the bottom of the first inning with a single, but was caught stealing and Campbell singled in the bottom of the second with two outs, but was left stranded. Jada King singled to left field with one out in the bottom of the third inning and Varela got a base hit to right field, but neither one advanced any further. Orf singled to start the bottom of the fourth inning, but she was called out at second base.Â
Blackburn scored a run in the top of the sixth inning on a double and a sacrifice fly.
Lyon College came back in the bottom of the sixth to threaten after Varela led off with a base hit to center field. She stole second with two outs and scored when Orf hit a home run over the center field fence to make it 2-1. Blackburn got a runner on by an error, who reached third base, but Campbell struck out the last batter to end the game.
Campbell picked up the win in the second game after coming to relieve
Sydney Lasher, who had spelled starting pitcher
Georgia Holzer. Holzer went 3.2 innings, gave up three runs and struck out two.Â
The Beavers took the early lead 1-0 in the top of the first inning and added another run to go up 2-0 in the top of the second inning. The Scots bounced back in the bottom of the second to tie the game. Orf led off with a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball.
Trinity Arrambide reached on a fielder's choice and moved up to second, while Orf went to third on the play. Campbell grounded out to the pitcher, but Orf scored. Holzer came up and singled to right field to score Arrambide and tie the game. Holzer moved up on a passed ball and then stole third, but was left stranded.
Blackburn took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth inning, but Lyon College came back to tie the game 3-3 in the bottom half of the fourth. With two outs, Lasher beat out a bunt-single and M.K. Duffield doubled to center field to score Lasher.
The score stayed tied until the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out,
Chloe McCance beat out a bunt-single and Varela bunted past the pitcher to get two Scots on base.
Anna Voth singled to center field to load up the bases and with two outs, Orf homered to left-center field for a walk-off grand slam.Â
