Scots sweep SLIAC double-header from Greenville

Heitmann throws shutout in Game 1

GREENVILLE, Illinois - Ayden Heitmann threw nine full innings, scattered four hits and allowed zero runs in a 4-0 Lyon College shutout win in the first game of a double-header against the Greenville Panthers at Robert E. Smith Field on a 47-degree day in Greenville.

The Scots (7-13, 3-1) beat the Panthers 19-4 in a seven-inning second game with Blair Francis picking up the win by also going the entire nine innings. 

In the first game, Ashton Compton led off the game with an infield single. Braden Hendrix put down a sacrifice bunt to move Compton to second and Jayden Cull homered to right center field to put the Scots up 2-0.
In the top of the second, Lane Vangrennip doubled to right field with two outs and Garrett Graef was hit by a pitch. Compton walked to load the bases, but a fielder's choice ended the threat.
In the third, Caleb Collins was hit by a pitch with two outs and left stranded on base and in the top of the fourth, Logan Lightner singled to right field, but was left at first base.
Cull reached on a an error in the top of the fifth inning and Logan Doody walked, but neither runner was able to advance. Vangernnip reached on an error in the top of the sixth and Graef singled to center field for runners at first and third with one out, but Graef was caught stealing second and a ground out ended the inning.
In the top of the seventh, Hendrix singled to center field to lead off the inning. He went to second and to third on consecutive passed balls by the Greenville catcher. Cull was hit by a pitch, then Doody hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield that brought in Hendrix. With two outs, Walker Smith walked to load the bases, but a strike out ended the inning with the Scots up 3-0.
Lyon added another run in the top of the ninth, Hendrix led off with a bunt-single and stole second with one out. Hendrix moved to third on a fly ball to right field and scored on a balk to make it 4-0. Heitmann struck out the last Greenville batter to end the game.

In the second game, the Scots came out with three runs in the top of the first inning. Compton led off with a walk, Hendrix singled to right field, Cull singled to right field and Compton scored. Doody got a base hit to left field to bring in Hendrix and Collins hit a sacrifice grounder to third base that moved the runners up. Smith hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Cull before the inning ended with Lyon up 3-0.
Greenville came back to score four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a one-run lead, but it didn't last long.
Vangennip led off the top of the second with a walk, then went to second on a wild pitch and to third on a second wild pitch. Graef walked and stole second base, then Compton walked to load the bases, which set up a sacrifice fly to center from Hendrix that scored Vangennip and tie the game 4-4.
The Scots broke the game open with an eight-run third inning. Doody led off with a single, Collins followed with a single and Smith doubled to right field to score Doody. With one out, Vangennip walked to load the bases, then Graef walked to bring in Collins. Compton singled to center to score Smith and with two outs, Cull singled down the left field line to bring in Vangennip and Graef. Doody followed with a double to right center field that scored Compton and Cull. Collins singled to right field and Doody scored to make it 12-4.
In the top of the fourth, Graef led off with a single up the middle and went to second on a wild pitch. Compton walked, Hendrix walked and Cull walked, scoring Graef. Compton scored on a wild pitch and Doody hit a grounder to bring in Hendrix. Collins singled and Cull scored on the play to make it 16-4.
In the top of the fifth, Vangennip led off with a single to center field and he went to second on a wild pitch with one out. Compton had a base hit to right field to score Vangennip. Hendrix doubled to left field, Cull singled to right field to score Compton and Hendrix to put the Scots up 19-4.
