Scots baseball splits doubleheader with MUW in Millington, Tennessee

MILLINGTON, Tennessee - Originally, a three-game SLIAC conference series was supposed to be played in Columbus, Mississippi on Saturday, but the venue changed as the weather forecasts called for rain around the Mississippi University for Women Owls baseball field.

A switch to USA Park in Millington, Tennessee was made by Wednesday and both teams drove over for their opening conference double-header. A slow cold steady rain started as the first game began. 

Lyon College (5-13, 1-1) won the first game 9-7 in 10-innings and the second game was a marathon four hours and 19 minutes game that saw MUW come out on top 18-15.

In the first game, the Owls took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning on a 2-run homer and a double. The Scots came back in the top of the fourth to get half of that back, when Braden Hendrix led off by being hit by a pitch. He tole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. After Jayden Cull walked, Logan Doody singled to left center to bring Hendrix. Caleb Collins followed with a single that loaded up the bases and Walker Smith hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in Cull, making it 4-2.

Lyon tied the game in the top of the seventh inning. Lane Vangeninip hit a one-out double to left center field, then Garrett Graef singled and stole second base. Ashton Compton hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in Vangennip and Hendrix singled to center field bringing Graef and tying the game at 4-4.

The Scots took the lead in the top of the eighth inning when Doody led off with a double to right field. Collins reached first on an error and advanced to second, while Doody scored on the play. Collins moved to third base on a passed ball and scored when Smith singled to center field. Smith stole second, but was left on base with Lyon College leading 6-4.

MUW came back in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game on a fluke balk play with two outs and runners at first and third. 

Tied at 6-6 into the top of the 10th inning, Collings was hit by a pitch, Smith walked, Logan Lightner put down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position, then Vangennip walked to load the bases. Graef was hit by a pitch and Collins scored to break the tie. Compton singled to left field to bring in two runs, Vangennip and Smith and put the Scots up 9-6.

The Owls added one more run before a fielder's choice at third base ended the game.

MUW led 3-0 in the second game before the Scots scored in the top of the third inning. Hendrix singled and advanced to second on the throw and Cull singled to right field to score Hendrix and made it 3-1
The Owls added three more runs in the bottom of the third and added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth to lead 10-1.

There was a delay for a torn piece of turf on the pitching mound that had to be repaired by the USA Park maintenance crew. That delay was around 20 minutes and it was still raining.

The rain never stopped in throughout the contest and when play resumed, the Scots fought back. With one out in the top of the sixth inning, Collins singled to right field and advanced to second on a passed ball. Smith singled to center field to score him, 10-2. 
With two outs, Smith advanced to second on a wild pitch and stole third base. Smith scored on an error by the Owl's catcher. Kyle Carver walked and Graef doubled to left field and Carver scored. Compton walked, Hendrix was hit by a pitch and the bases were loaded for Cull. Cull drew a walk and Graef scored, Doody walked and Compton scored. After MUW changed pitchers, Collings singled to center field to bring in Hendrix, then Smith got a base hit to center field to bring in Doody and Cull and make it a 10-9 game.

The Owls added two more runs to go up 12-9, but in the top of the eighth, Lyon took the lead. Doody led off with a walk, Collins beat out a bunt-single, Smith singled to left field to bring in Doody. Lightner reached first on an error by the pitcher and Collins scored. With one out, Graef was hit by a pitch and Compton doubled to left center field to score three runs. Hendrix singled to score Compton and advanced to second on a the throw to the plate. Hendrix stole third and Cull was hit by a pitch before the inning ended with Lyon College leading 15-12.

MUW came back to score six runs in the bottom half of the eighth inning to go up 18-15.
Lyon did not score in the top of the ninth.
