LONGVIEW, Texas - A walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 10th inning did in the Lyon College Scots in a 9-6 loss to the LeTourneau Yellowjackets in Longview, Texas.
The Scots (4-12) had 10 hits in the game.
The Yellowjackets took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but
Jayden Cull got a lead-off single to left field and went to second on a ground out He was left stranded at second base.
Garrett Graef walked with one out in the top of the third and stole second base with two outs, but didn't score. After LeTourneau added another run in the bottom of the third to lead 3-0, but Lyon continued to scatter hits.
Logan Doody singled to let field, Cull was hit by a pitch, but the next two batters struck out.
In the top of the fifth, Graef singled to left field with one out.
Ashton Compton walked,
Braden Hendrix was hit by a pitch to load up the bases and a wild pitch scored Graef and moved up the other two runners. Another wild pitch allowed Compton to score to cut the lead to 3-2. Then Doody reached on a fielder's choice and Hendrix got caught in a run-down between third and home and was tagged out. The ball was thrown back to third to get Doody trying to get to third base and the inning was over.
The Yellowjackets went back up 5-2, but the Scots responded in the top of the sixth inning. Cull led off with a single to center field. With one out,
Caleb Collins singled to right field and
Logan Lightner followed him with a base hit to left that loaded the bases. Lane Vangennip came into pinch hit for
Kooper McCoy, was hit by a pitch and that brought in Cull. Graef hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in Collins. Compton singled to third base and scored Lightner to tie the game 5-5 with two outs.
The Scots had a chance in the top of the seventh inning when Cull singled with one out and advanced to second and third on consecutive wild pitches. Collins walked and stole second, then Lightner was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but a ground out ended the inning.
Garrett Graef walked in the top of the eighth and
Brayden Anderson got a hit in the top of the ninth inning. Finally, in the top of the 10th inning, Graef led off with a hit to the first base side. He went to second on a wild pitch and scored when Compton reached on a fielding error by the second baseman and advanced on a wild throw back to the infield.
Leading 6-5 into the bottom of the 10th, the Yellowjackets led off with a double to left field, but he was thrown out at third on a fielder's choice. A single made for two runners on base, the an issued walked loaded the paths. With two outs, a grand slam was hit to left center field off the first pitch of the at-bat.
