PENSACOLA, Florida - The Lyon College Scots had an 8-1 lead on the Birmingham Southern College Panthers through three and half innings at the Studer's Blue Wahoo Challenge in Pensacola on Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth and came back to take the lead 9-8 with a six-run fifth. They added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and one in the seventh to win 13-8 over Lyon College.
Ashton Compton singled to left field to lead off the game for Lyon, but he was cut down in a inning-ending double-play.
The Scots started scoring in the top of the second inning and took a 4-0 lead.
Jayden Cull led off with a single to left field, followed by a single to center field by
Kooper McCoy.
Logan Lightner walked to load the bases and
Walker Smith singled to left field to bring in Cull.
Caleb Collins singled to right field to score McCoy and Lightner. With Smith at third base, Compton grounded out to second base to bring him home.
In the top of the third,
Logan Doody singled to the third base side and he moved to second on a passed ball with two outs, but he was left stranded.Â
Smith singled to lead off the top of the fourth and advanced to second when Collins reached on a fielder's choice.
Thomas Lingren hit a sacrifice grounder to third base to move up the runners. Just after a pitching change for the Panthers, Compton reached on a fielder's choice that brought in Smith, then
Braden Hendrix hit a sacrifice grounder to third base that scored Collins. Doody was hit by a pitch and both he and Compton moved up on a wild pitch. Cull followed that with a double to center field that scored two runs and made it an 8-1 Scots lead.
Birmingham scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth with a run-scoring triple and a single to right field.Â
With one out in the top of the fifth, Smith reached on an error and Collings singled, but a double-play ended a potential threat.Â
The Panthers had three straight singles after a Lyon error that scored an unearned run and a 2-out triple that plated three runs. A hit batsman, resulted in a two-run single that put them up 9-8.
In the top of the sixth inning, Compton singled to left field, Hendrix was hit by a pitch and Cull reached on a fielder's choice with one out. Compton was caught stealing at home plate to end the inning.
Birmingham added three more runs on only one hit in the bottom of the sixth to go up 12-8.
Lightner walked with one out in the top of the seventh, but was left stranded on base. The Panthers tacked on another run to lead 13-8.
In the top of the eighth, Hendrix walked and went to second on a wild pitch, but was left standing on second base. In the top of the ninth, the Scots went down swinging three times in a row.Â
