Lyon College women rank first in USCAA Division I poll

BATESVILLE, Arkansas - While battling for the regular season crown in the SLIAC, the Lyon College women's basketball team has been recognized as the top team in the Week 10 USCAA Coaches Poll as of Wednesday afternoon.

The Scots (14-7, 9-5) are going against Greenville University on Thursday at home and complete their home schedule with a Saturday afternoon matinee with Spalding University. The Scots will be on the road next week against Westminster College and Webster to end the year.

The USCAA ranked Lyon College number one this week.

"We've been third for a couple of weeks and had a rough stretch there in January and the last two weeks we played on the road and at home and we are on a five-game win streak," Lyon College head coach Casey Fowler said. "The two teams that have been above us are on two-game losing streaks, so going into this week, we knew there would be a possibility we would be up there depending on how they voted. I think the worse thing you want to do is get to where you have a good position in the national tournament and then lose with two weeks of regular season.
"I am happy we are getting recognized for what we have done over the last two weeks heading into February, but you can't lose site of that and drop your ranking," he said. "I really hope we can stay focused and keep doing what we have been doing to get to this point. We have had good practices and I hope that continues. This is the last week of home games and we are going on the road to see what we can do."

The Scots have defeated Mississippi University for Women 74-62, beat Fontbonne University 98-66 at home and took care of Principia College 87-69. Last week, Lyon College beat Eureka College 102-48 and Blackburn College 103-65.
The Scots have scored over 100 points this year seven times, including a college and national record of 144 points earlier in the season.

"I have coached a long time and multiple levels, and even my best D1 teams that I coached, did not have this kind of fire power," Lyon College women's basketball assistant coach Michael Peckham said. "I think it is outstanding for our young team. Coach Fowler has put together this team in a short time period in his second year. The style of play is exciting, it is fun to play this way and I could not be more excited for our program and for the school."

Lyon College leads Florida National University, University of Main Fort Kent, Bryant & Stratton Syracuse, The Apprentice School, Paul Quinn College and Bryant & Stratton Albany.
