BATESVILLE, Arkansas - The Lyon College Scots softball lost a double-header to the Saint Mary of the Woods Pomoroys 9-0 and 12-0 at Howard and Mary Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Scots (1-3) gave up seven runs in the top of the second inning of Game 1 and never could recover, losing 9-0. Lyon College had two hits in the game one from
Sophie Varela, which was the first at-bat in the game for the home squad, and the other by
Whitney Mitchell. Six Scots batters struck out in the five-inning game and three were left on base.
McKenzie Campbell,
Olivia Orf and
Madison DeRoussel pitched in the first game for Lyon College.
Valera led off the game with a single,
Anna Voth sacrificed her to second with a grounder to third, Mitchell reached on an error and Valera moved to third base. Mitchell stole second with one out, then MK Duffield reached on a fielder's choice that saw Valera get thrown out at the plate. The next batter struck out to end the bottom of the first inning.
Mitchell singled to start the bottom of the fourth inning with the Scots trailing 8-0 at that point. Mitchell moved to second on a wild pitch and was left stranded there.
The second game wasn't much better for Lyon College.
Saint Mary of the Woods took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, added six more runs in the second inning, scored one run in the fourth and closed out the game with three runs in the top of the fifth inning.
This time the Scots were allowed only one hit.
In the first inning, Valera and Orf walked, but didn't score. Valera's hit came in the bottom of the third inning with two outs. She also stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error.
Savanna Lee walked to start the bottom of the fourth inning and moved to second when
Skylar Foreman grounded out. Lee was left at second base.
