BATESVILLE, Arkansas - The Lyon College Scots baseball team made its 2024 debut on Thursday afternoon at Fred Wann Field against the University of Dubuque Spartans.
The Scots (0-2) dropped the initial double-header 13-1 in seven innings and fell in the second game after a battle for 13 innings, 5-1.Â
GAME 1
Ayden Heitmann started on the mound for the first game against the Spartans and struck out two of the first four batters he faced in the top of the first inning. In the bottom half of the inning, Lightner reached first on an error,
Logan Doody singled and
Jayden Cull got a two-out base hit that brought in
Logan Lightner for a 1-0 Lyon College lead.
The Spartans (2-0) tied the game at 1-1 on a single to right field and a double to right center.
Kooper McCoy doubled for the Scots to start the bottom of the third inning, but he was left stranded along with
Grant Yates, who drew a walk.Â
In the top of the fourth inning, Dubuque put up three more runs to go ahead 4-1. In the bottom of the fourth,
Braden Hendrix reached on an error for the Scots and advanced to second on a sacrifice grounder from
Brayden Anderson. That was all of Lyon's threat in the inning.
Dubuque put up another run in the top of the fifth to lead 5-1. In the bottom of the fifth,
Ashton Compton got a single up the middle for the Scots, but did not advance further.
Thanks to a three-run homer, the Spartans upped their lead to 9-1 in the top of the sixth inning. After the Scots went three up and three down, Dubuque put the game away with four more runs to lead 13-1 in the top of the seventh.
In the bottom of the seventh, Lightner was hit by a pitch, McCoy walked and Cull was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. Lyon did not score.
GAME 2Â
The Scots battled the Spartans for 12 and half innings of one-run baseball.Â
Dubuque took the lead in the top of the fourth inning 1-0, but the Scots managed to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the eighth inning.Â
Hendrix singled down the left field line, Lightner hit a sacrifice grounder to advance Hendrix to second. Hendrix moved to third on a passed ball, then McCoy doubled to right center field with two outs to score Hendrix and tie the game.
Cameron Gordon started on the mound for the Scots in the second game and pitched four scoreless innings.
Patrick Babcock came in and threw for the next seven innings through the 12th.Â
Dubuque scored four runs in the top of the 13th inning to take the win.
