Austin College upsets Lyon College in Becknell 82-74 on Saturday afternoon

BATESVILLE, Arkansas - The Austin College Kangaroos took a late 10 point lead and held on to defeat the Lyon College Scots 82-74 at Becknell Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

The Scots (2-1) trailed by one point at halftime 39-38. 
Kylon McCullough led Lyon College with 17 points, Israel Palmer had 13 points, Malik Madison had 11 point, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots, and Frank Toney rounded out the Scots double-digit scoring with 11 points and five assists. 
Colbie West scored nine points and had eight rebounds, Trent Bell scored five points, Jaaron Harriott had three points, while John Paul Morgan and Kennedy Warren both scored two points each.

The score was tied 11 times and there were seven lead changes, most of which came in the first half.

Toney started the game with a layup off the opening tip that was won by Madison. Later, West completed a three-point play to tie the game at 10-10, then Toney tied the game at 12-12 and Morgan scored inside for a Scots lead. Madison put in a basket made a steal and Palmer made one of two free throws to make it 17-12 with 10:08 left in the first half.

McCullough hit a three-pointer to break a 17-17 tie and put Lyon College back in front, then Palmer scored on a jumper to make it 22-19. McCullough hit another three for the Scots, but Austin College answered to make it a one-point game 25-24. Harriott's tip-in with 5:51 to go in the half put Lyon College back in front 27-26. Bell tied the game at 29-29 at the free throw line and McCullough broke free on a fast-break for a dunk to tie the game at 31-31.

Toney hit a jumper, Bell made a three-pointer and Kennedy Warren put in a jump shot in the final seconds of the half to get the Scots to within one point.

West knocked down a three-pointer to start the scoring in the second half and put Lyon College up by two points, 41-39 and Madison added two free throws. Austin College came back to tie the game, but McCullough hit a jumper for the Scots. Madison made a jumper in the paint, but Austin College tied the game at 47-47 with 14:26 to go.

Toney scored and McCullough made another three-pointer, but Austin College ame back to tie the game at 52-52 with 11:20 left. A dunk from Madison got the Scots to within one point, but the Kangaroos opened up a six point lead, 60-54 until Harriott made a free throw. 

Austin College led by nine points, 64-55 when Madison made two more free throws. West made one of two free throws and Palmer scored on a driving layup to cut the score to 68-60 with 6:29 left.

McCullough and Palmer both made one of two free throws, but Austin College maintained an eight-point lead with 1:40 left to play, 77-69. Palmer made a layup and completed a three-point play, but it was too little too late as the Kangaroos added two free throws in the final 13 seconds to maintain their eight-point lead. 

The Scots will be in action at home against the University of the Ozarks on Tuesday night at Becknell Gymnasium.
