BATESVILLE, Arkansas - The McMurry War Eagles scored 21 points in the first quarter and went on to defeat the Lyon College Scots 28-0 in SCAC play at Pioneer Stadium on a rainy Saturday afternoon.
The first series of the game saw Lyon's
Quatavious Gatewood intercept a McMurry pass in the endzone. McMurry came back later in the quarter to take a 7-0 lead at the 4:12 mark.
Then a muffed punt that was recovered by the War Hawks led to a 14-0 lead with 1:03 to play in the first quarter. The Scots forced McMurry to turn the ball over one downs midway through the second quarter, but a punt ended the drive four plays later. McMurry scored with 1:50 left on the first half clock to go up by three touchdowns.
An interception by the War Hawks was returned 36 yards for a touchdown with 11:14 left in the game.
Individually, the Scots used three quarterbacks,
Joe Galay,
Bryton Usrey and
Bryan Gonzalez. Usrey led the group with 4-for-11 passing for 26 yards.
On the ground,
Jaylin Babers led the rushing attack for Lyon College with 21 runs for 149 yards.Â
Cedric Allen led the receivers with one catch for 11 yards.
Xavier Long had two catches for 10 yards and Reggie Brown caught one pass for eight yards.
Defensively,
Mason Davis had 12 tackles and one sack,
Keidrick Wooten had eight tackles, 3.5 TFLs and a half of a sack with
Nate Sarver.
Slayton Wheeler had a sack as well to go with six tackles.
On special teams,
Jesus Romero-Castillo had six punts for 283 yards, which was a 47.2 average.
The Scots (1-8, 0-7) end their regular season and their first year in the SCAC at Austin College next Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
