BATESVILLE, Arkansas -
Frank Toney scored 18 points,
John Paul Morgan had 14 points, Trent Bell added 12 and
Nikola SaSaroga scored 11 points to lead the Lyon College Scots past the Eureka College Red Devils 83-78 in SLIAC action at Becknell Gymnasium on Thursday night.
The Scots (7-3, 4-0) led by 10 points, 40-30 at halftime and held off a late charge from Eureka College to stay atop the SLIAC standings with the win.
Toney's three-pointer to start the game led to a basket from Bell and a basket inside from
Malik Madison. Eureka College led by one point, but
Kylon McCullough put in a jump shot and SaSaroga scored inside. The Red Devils came back to take a 17-14 lead, but two free throws from
Jaaron Harriott and SaSaroga made a three-pointer to put the Scots up by two points, 19-17. Morgan scored two times in a row to keep Lyon College in front, then Bell and Toney made consecutive three-pointers. Bell made a free throw and
Jones White made a three-pointer. Madison scored inside and White made another three-pointer. Bell hit a jump shot to make it a 10-point Scots lead at halftime.
Eureka took a one-point lead 44-43 even after Bell made a jump shot for the Scots. Madison scored inside again and SaSaroga made two free throws before Harriott hit a three-pointer. Again, Eureka College came back to take a one-point lead 53-52 with 10:45 to go. Morgan scored two times in a row under the basket and
Luke Bridges tied the game with a put-back, 56-56. Toney made a three-pointer to put Lyon College ahead by one point, then made a steal and converted the layup for a three-point lead. Toney came back to hit a jump shot and added two free throws to keep the Scots slim lead.Â
Morgan scored inside twice, then Bridges put in two baskets and completed a three-point play to put the Scots up 74-66 with 2:39 to play. Bell scored and Bridges hit inside. Toney put two free throws and Morgan made two free throws with 20 seconds left to put the advantage at five points for Lyon College. Toney added the final free throw for Lyon with 12 seconds left.Â
The Scots will host Blackburn College on Saturday at 3 p.m.
