COLUMBUS, Mississippi -
Natalya Kaza tied the Lyon College Women's Basketball scoring record for a game with a 37-point performance in a 76-64 win over the Mississippi University for Women Owls on Tuesday night in SLIAC action in Columbus, Mississippi.
Kaza tied former Scot K.K.Hodges, who scored 37 points against Trevecca Nazarene on February 9, 2008.
Kaza made 13 of 28 field goals and made 8 of 18 three-pointers to go with seven rebounds.
Samantha Taylor was the next leading scorer for the Scots with 11 points and five steals.
Savanna Lopez scored eight points,
Alexis Soloman had six points, while
Allison Byars had four points,
Zharia Childress had four points and
Brooklyn Rowe scored four points in the win that put Lyon College at 10-7 overall and 5-5 in the SLIAC standings.
Lyon College led 20-12 after the first quarter, but only got 10 points in the second period to lead 30-24 at halftime. The Scots outscored MUW 44-38 in the second half to win by 12.
Taylor and Lopez scored early baskets, but the Owls were up 7-6 when Kaza made her first three-pointer. Seconds later, she made her second three-pointer and Childress scored for a 12-7 Lyon lead. Lopez and Soloman scored, then Rowe hit a jumper and Childress scored again to make it an eight-point lead for the Scots.
In the second period, Taylor made two free throws, Soloman scored inside and Kaza made her third three-pointer for a 27-20 lead. A few minutes later, Kaza made her fourth three-pointer to keep the margin at eight points.
Kaza started the third period with her fifth three-pointer, Lopez scored inside and Taylor made a three-pointer for the Scots to make it 38-24. Kaza canned her sixth three-pointer, Soloman made a layup and Kaza made her seventh trey of the game. After Rowe scored, Lopez put in a basket and Kaza made one of two free throws for a 51-40 lead.
Kaza made a jumper, Byars scored, Kaza hit a layup off a pass from Taylor, then Kaza made her eighth three-pointer of the game. Byars put in another layup, Kaza scored again and Taylor made a layup for a 66-46 Lyon College lead with 4:53 to play in the game. Kaza made two free throws, put in a layup and Taylor made two free throws. Kaza made the last shot of the game with 48 seconds to play.
The Scots will host Fontbonne on Thursday night at 5:30 p.m. and play Principia at home on Saturday at 1 p.m.
