BATESVILLE, Arkansas - The Lyon College women's basketball Scots lost to the Westminster Blue Jays 102-97 on Thursday night at Becknell Gymnasium in SLIAC action.
The Scots (9-6, 4-4) led 34-25 after the first quarter, but were out scored 27-12 in the second quarter and trailed the rest of the game.
Savanna Lopez led Lyon College with 26 points and 10 rebounds.
Natalya Kaza had 18 points,
Zharia Childress scored 14 points and had 10 rebounds,
Brooklyn Rowe hit for 14 points and had five steals,
Allison Byars had 11 points and nine assists,
Samantha Taylor scored 10 points and had eight assists and four steals, while
Alexis Soloman had four points.
Byars started the game with a three-pointer, Lopez scored and Rowe hit a three-pointer and a jump shot for a 10-4 Lyon College lead early on. Free throws by Byars led to a basket from Childress and a jumper from Taylor. Childress scored two baskets in a row, Taylor put in a shot and Childress scored again for a 26-11 lead. Rowe made a three-pointer and hit a basket inside to make it 32-21 and Soloman scored to make it a nine-point lead by the end of the first quarter for the Scots.
Lopez hit inside, Taylor made a three-pointer and added a free throw for a 40-25 lead early in the second quarter. Childress scored, but the Scots got stuck on 42 points and Westminster came back to close the gap to two points with 5:08 to go before halftime. Childress scored again, but Westminster came back to score nine 10 straight points to lead 52-44. Solomon scored on a baseline jumper just before the break to make it a 52-46 game.
Lyon College trailed by as much as 11 points early in the third quarter, but Kaza hit a three-pointer and Lopez scored inside. Lopez scored two more baskets and Childress scored inside again before Lopez made a shot to cut Westminster's lead to 68-62. Taylor made two free throws, Lopez scored and the Scots were down by two points with 3:12 to go in the period. Lopez put in the next three points, Byars added two free throws and Lopez put in a jumper at the buzzer to make it an 80-73 Westminster lead.
Kaza made two free throws, Byars added one from the line, Lopez made both of her foul shots to keep the game at four points early on, but the Blue Jays moved out by seven points before Rowe made a free throw. Byars added two free throws, Kaza hit a jump shot to get the Scots two within four points again 89-85. Despite another three-pointer for Kaza, Westminster went up by 11 points with 40 seconds to go. Rowe hit a trey, Kaza made a jump shot and Kaza completed a three-point play with three seconds left, but that got the Scots as close as five points.
