Lyon volleyball picks up first match win of the season

BATESVILLE, Arkansas - The Lyon College volleyball Scots came up with their first win of the season over the visiting Freed-Hardeman Lions 3-1 on Friday night at Becknell Gymnasium.

The Scots (1-7) lost the first set 25-16, but came back to win three straight sets for the first time this season 25-17, 25-18 and 25-22 to take the match.

Kylee Sabella led Lyon College with 16 kills, while Isabella Beasley, Paeton Tucker and Keely Beary all had nine kills each. Madeline Hopson had 26 assists and Lauren White had 20.

In the first set, Hopson started the Scots off with an ace serve and Samantha Ferguson, who had six kills on the night, got her first kill, but the Lions came back to take a 7-3 lead. Freed-Hardeman went up 10-4 and 12-5 before committing back-to-back attack errors that was followed by a kill from Tucker. Bethany Williams served an ace for the Scots and Beasley got a kill, then a block by Ferguson made 15-12.
After a bad set from the Lions, Sabella got a kill to close the gap to one point. Freed-Hardeman raced out to a 24-14 lead before Tucker got a kill and an attack error gave Lyon two more points. The first set ended on a kill from Freed-Hardeman.

In the second set, kills from Beary and Sabella tied the contest early at 3-3. Sabella got two more kills to give the Scots a four-point lead, then another kill from Sabella and a kill by Ferguson kept Lyon College ahead by two points, 9-7. The Lions tied the game, but a back-to-back kills from Beary was followed by a rally from Freed-Hardeman to tie the game at 11-11.
Then the Scots rallied again with Ferguson, Sabella and Beary getting kills on three straight possessions. Williams got a kill, then Sabella got another kill and served an ace for a 17-13 lead. Hopson got a kill off an assist from Sabella, then White and Hopson served an ace and made another kill off an assist from Sabella again for a 20-15 lead.
Hopson added another kill and after an attack error by the Lions, Ferguson got a kill for a 23-17 lead. Two attack errors by the Lions ended the game for the Scots.

In the third set, Lyon College continued with the momentum after Freed-Hardeman tied the game early on at 4-4, 5-5 and 7-7. In fact the Lions led 10-9 before a kill Beasley got the Scots back on track. A bad set from the Lions and an ace serve from Hopson put Lyon College in the lead by one, 11-10. 
Freed-Hardeman took a 15-12 lead, but a kill from Beary and another bad set put the Scots back in front. Sabella and Williams had kills off a set from Hopson and White, respectively. The Lions tied it at 18-18 before Sabella, Tucker and Beasley had straight kills. After an attack error by the Lions led to a kill from Tucker and an ace serve for the win from Sabella.

The Scots had the Lions where they wanted them and raced out to a 5-1 lead on kills from Beary and Sabella. Beary and Beasley both had kills, then Sabella served an ace. An attack error, a Beasley kill and another Lion attack error led to an 11-7 lead for Lyon. 
A service error on Freed was followed by a kill from Ferguson and Beary off of Hopson sets. Beary and Beasley had kills again for a 16-12 lead, then a kill by Sabella and two from Tucker put the Scots up by four. Beasley had a kill and an attack error was followed by a kill from Sabella and Hopson off a set from Olivia Locke, then Sabella won the match for the Scots with a massive kill that was not to be returned.

The Scots will take on Centenary College at 12 p.m. and play Rhodes at 2 p.m. at Hendrix College.
