Scots baseball split double-header with Williams Baptist

BATESVILLE, Arkansas - The Lyon College Diamond Scots split an American Midwest Conference double-header on Friday afternoon against the Williams Baptist Eagles at Fred Wann Field.

The Scots (17-22, 10-10) lost the first game 1-0, but won the second game 3-2 to keep the series tied. Both teams are tied in the AMC standings with identical 10-10 records. Saturday's matchup at 5 p.m. will determine the fourth or the fifth seeded team from the league to enter the post-season next Tuesday at CarShield Field in O'Fallon, Missouri.

In the first game, Lyon College scattered seven hits around in seven innings, but couldn't score. The Eagles scored their only run in the top of the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the first inning, Bradley McLemore tripled with one out, but was left stranded at third base for the Scots. Zane Wallace singled in the bottom  of the third, but a double-play ended the inning. Logan Lightner singled in the bottom of the four for Lyon College, but he too was left standing on first base. Hayden Hargrave doubled with one out in the bottom of the fifth, but a pop up and a ground out to the pitcher ended the Scots potential scoring threat.
Austin Shipman doubled to deep right center field and tried to stretch into a triple, but was tagged just before he got to the bag in the bottom of the sixth inning for Lyon College. McLemore followed that with a single.
The Scots threatened again in the bottom of the seventh when Lane McLevain doubled and Hargrave walked with one out. A fly ball to left field and a pop fly to the third base ended the game.

Ayden Heitmann pitched seven full innings for the Scots and gave up one run on three hits. He struck out eight batters and walked one.

The second game started off more favorably for Lyon College. Shipman led off the bottom of the first inning with a base hit and Brayden Anderson came in to pinch run. McLemore was hit by a pitch, then Lightner singled to load the bases. With one out, Anderson scored on a passed ball for a 1-0 Scots lead.
Lyon College threatened in the bottom of the third inning when Wallace led off with a double, but he was left stranded at second.
In the bottom of the fourth, Derek Underwood led off with a double and moved to third when Hargrave got a base hit. With two outs, Wallace singled in Underwood to make it a 2-0 Scots lead.
Lyon scored again in the bottom of the seventh inning when Lightner reached on an error, stole second and scored on a sacrifice grounder from Underwood to make it a 3-1 game.
Williams Baptist scored another run in the top of the eighth, but hit into a double-play to end the game in the top of the ninth inning.

Cameron Gordon picked up the win for the Scots. Gordon pitched eight innings, gave up two runs and struck out five. Underwood came in to pitch the ninth inning and get the save.
