BATESVILLE, Arkansas - The Lyon College Scots will be the fifth seeded team in the upcoming American Midwest Conference tournament at CarShield Field in O'Fallon, Missouri after losing 4-1 to the visiting Williams Baptist Eagles.
The Scots (17-23,10-11) fell behind 2-0 through the first six innings until
Zane Wallace hit a sacrifice fly that scored
Derek Underwood. However, the Eagles added two more runs in the eighth inning and kept Lyon College off the base paths.
The Eagles scored their first two runs in the top of the first inning. When the Scots came to bat,
Bradley McLemore was hit by a pitch with one out and left stranded at first. Lyon College starting pitcher
Jesse McGonigal struck out two of the three batters he faced in the top of the second inning, but the Scots could only get a walk by
Jayden Cull with one out in the bottom of the frame. Cull was also left stranded on base.
In the top of the third, McGonigal picked off an Eagle runner at first base after giving up a lead-off hit. And in the bottom of the inning,
Kyle Carver was hit by a pitch,
Austin Shipman walked and both of them moved up a base when McLemore hit a sacrifice grounder. A pop up to the shortstop and a ground out ended the threat with both runners left on base.
McGonigal struck out two more batters in the fourth and in the home half, Underwood walked and with one out,
Hayden Hargrave got the Scots first hit of the game. Both Underwood and Hargrave stole up a base, but a strike out and a line drive out to second base left both runners on the paths.
After getting the Eagles out on a run-down between third and home, the Scots tried to put together another attack. Underwood was hit by a pitch with one out and Cull walked. Hargrave was hit by a pitch and loaded the bases. Wallace hit a long fly to left field that scored Underwood, but a strike out ended the inning with the score 2-1.
After McGonigal struck out two of the three batters for the Eagles, Lyon tried to mount another score. McLemore reached on an error with one out and
Lane McLevain walked with two outs.
Balah Muhammed came in to pinch-run for McLemore and was caught stealing third.
After the Eagles went up 4-1, Underwood singled in the bottom of the eighth, but was left stranded on base and the Scots went down in order in the bottom of the ninth.
The Scots will take on Harris-Stowe State University in the first game of the AMC tournament beginning at 10 a.m. on Tuesday morning. Should Lyon College win that game, they would play Williams Baptist at 2 p.m. on Tuesday. The winner of that game, gets top-seeded Missouri Baptist on Wednesday.Â
