BATESVILLE, Arkansas - The Lyon College Softball Scots had destiny in their own hands this weekend at Howard and Mary House Field.
A sweep of both the University of Health, Sciences and Pharmacy on Saturday and another sweep, this time of the Harris-Stowe State University Hornets, 10-2 and 20-0 on Sunday afternoon, put the Lyon College Scots softball team in the post-season tournament.
Against Harris-Stowe, the Scots (19-21, 7-13) scored 10 runs on 12 hits in the first game on Sunday.
All that came after the Hornets had taken a 2-0 lead on the Scots through the first three four innings. In the bottom of the fifth, though,
Whitney Mitchell singled in
McKenzie Campbell.
Anna Voth singled in
Sophie Varela and
Mya King, then
Fallon Lancaster hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Mitchell. Campbell singled in MK Duffield and King got a base hit to bring in
Alyssa Buentello to make it a 7-2 Scots lead.
Duffield singled to bring in Voth and
Trinity Arrambide advanced to second on a passed ball that Duffield scored on.
Sabrina Lowe singled in Arrambide for a 10-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth.
Arrambide led the hitting attack for Lyon College with three hits in three at-bats with two runs scored and a walk. Voth had two hits and scored a run, had two RBIs and walked once. Varela, Mitchell, Duffield, Lancaster, Lowe, Campbell and King all had one hit each in the game. Duffield scored twice, while Varela, Mitchell, Buentello, Campbell and King all scored with Arrambide.Â
Lowe pitched the first three innings and gave up four hits and two runs. Campbell came in to pitch the final three innings and didn't allow a hit or a run and struck out five.
In Game 2, the Scots had 20 runs, 14 hits and took advantage of seven errors by Harris-Stowe.
Lyon scored two runs in the bottom of the second when
Madison Lawrence singled in Arrambide, who hit a triple.
Emily Martinez singled to bring in Lawrence for a 2-0 lead.
The Scots scored 12 times in the bottom of the third inning. Arrambide singled in Duffield, Buentello had a base hit to bring in Lancaster and Arrambide. Martinez reached first on an error that scored Lawrence. Varela singled in Buentello, Mitchell doubled in Varela and Martinez, then Voth hit a sacrifice grounder to score King to make it 10-0.
Later in the inning, Lawrence singled in Duffield, then Buentello hit a base-clearing double that scored Lawrence, Arrambide and Lancaster to make it a 14-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Lancaster singled in Voth, Duffield scored on a passed ball, Varela was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in Lancaster, King was hit by a pitch to bring in Buentello, then Voth was hit by a pitch to score Lowe. Campbell walked with the bases loaded to bring in Varela for a 20-0 Scots lead.
Varela was 1-for-3 with a two runs scored, two RBIs and a walk. Mitchell went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and
Mya King was 1 for 1 with an RBI. Voth reached on an error twice, scored a run and had two RBIs. Duffield was 2-for-4 with three runs scored, Campbell walked and had an RBI and Lancaster was 1-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI. Arrambide was 2-for-2 with three runs scored, a walk and an RBI, Lawrence was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and she had two RBIs, Buentello was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and had five runs batted in and walked once, Martinez was 1-for-3 with a run scored and two runs batted in and Lowe scored a run and walked.
Arrambide had a triple, Buentello had two doubles, while Mitchell and Duffield had one double each. Varela had two stolen bases and Mitchell had one.Â
Buentello was the winning pitcher, going four innings, allowed no runs and two hits, while striking out two. Lowe came in to get the final three outs.
The Scots will take on Cottey College in the first round of the American Midwest Conference tournament that will be in Columbia, Missouri the first week in May.
